Ya, that's a nice machine! Pricey, but he wouldn't outgrow that one quickly. I think it was the 305 I almost bought.

Re: General Welding Question
I have a Lincoln weld-pak 155 220V w/gas & has done everything I have needed it to do.

I have the 140 since I don't have 220 in my garage.

I used to own a Lincoln cracker box. Now my work has provided me with a gas powered Miller bobcat. I love having a mobile shop to take home everyday.

Re: General Welding Question
Lots of welders on here, eh? Definitely a lot to consider. Welding is one of those things I'd love to do, but don't have the money or space. Well, space may not be an issue. We'll have to see. Thanks for all the info, I get the feeling I'll be coming back with noob welding questions

It works good for small jobs. 3/16" and smaller. You can do 1/4" or 5/16 but recommends 2 passes. It really needs a 30 amp breaker. I run it off a 20 amp but it will trip it occasionally.
But for a small garage welder I would recommend it and you can get some good welds if you go buy some gas for it but at the same time you can haul it around and knock out small jobs going gas-less.

Eventually I might shell out the dough for the Miller multimatic 200. The bobcat 250 is nice because its multiprocess and has a plasma cutter too.

When people say 'gas' for a welder, what kind of gas is it? Butane, propane, natural, acetylene, etc?

I've read too you can use helium for tig welding. As far as the 98/2 mix goes that's what we use at work. Watch using 100% argon in an enclosed area though.

IIRC - Most "standard beginner" setups would be 75/25 (Argon/CO2 mix - AKA C25) - worst case, just ask your welding supply place what is the most common for 'general mild steel welding' & they will hook you up.
Advanced processes & users will "fine tune" the mixture and even overall gases to suit what they are working with.

Re: General Welding Question
Ah, I see. Doesn't sound to frustratingly complicated.
