That's a real good idea epicelite.
Bolting down a steel box with a heavy duty padlock sounds much better than some of the "TSA approved" lock boxes I have seen.
This project is on my mind...I was at Bass pro shop last night checking out a couple car vault models that I have seen online...
I just don't trust that a 2 bit criminal who can break into my truck, would not have the tools and skill to pick those little file cabinet locks, or just cut the cable and run.
I am thinking that one way or another, I need to cover the lock box with a blanket, or something like that.

Thanks!

they don't have one for a ranger but they do have some that may work for you.

All those models. and nothing for the Ranger...
But shoot, they are expensive...I can't tell how good the lock is, maybe a pry bar would snap it open?

I like the location in the center console, but I might have to find my own lockbox that would fit inside, maybe figure out a way to padlock and then possiby bolt it down all the way thru the seat.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I finally got around to doing this project.
I decided to install a locking drawer under the seat of my 98 Ranger.
While I don't plan on keeping valuables in there for very long, I think it's better than nothing, and total cost of the vault and hardware was $65.00.
I set it back under the seat to keep it out of sight.
Pics attached.

I had to cut down L-brackets, I couldn't find anything specific made for the Ranger.

Nice work! Where did you get the drawer? I'd like to do something like this.

The easiest way to avoid gun theft is to keep the truck's interior free of things to see and steal. If a thief sees nothing to steal, he'll move on......nobody steals Rangers, but smash and grabs are getting popular.

I treat mine like a cell phone. Just think if you got a call and you had to un lock a box to answer a call. When in the wifes civic it tucks nicely between console and driver seat. When in the saturn it sits above the radio in that little compartment. In the dodge it sits in the compartment under the radio within reach in all situations. When I leave the car it goes in the AG about 4:30 in my pants.

I respect your opinion, and I am not trying to change that, but I would like to clarify my intentions.
I am a legal CCL license holder, and it is perfectly legal in Illinois for me to keep the gun in an unlocked glovebox, or an unlocked center console, IF the vehicle doors are locked.
I want to do more than what the law requires, and lock both the doors and lock the gun away from criminals who would break into my beloved old 98 Ranger.
If, or when the conceal carry laws change to allow me to legally carry in areas currently restricted, the gun safe can be used for gum.
Kind regards...
God bless.
Hi there,

I saw that you would like to be extra safe, did you find a solution?
I would like to buy a gun safe for my guns but I really don't have too much experience.
I was looking around and searching for information. I found an article on recommendations for top rated gun safes but I would like to hear an opinion from someone who knows what to look for.

Thank you

Looks great, Bill. I'd like to do something like this, but can't find any similar drawer-style safes. It looks to me like you're using the Bulldog BD1170. I can't find that available anywhere. I'm wondering if it's just so awesome that everybody is selling out or if there's some major flaw that caused the company to stop making them.

How is your setup holding up?
