Default 98+ ranger Hidden snorkel PVC

10-21-2015
Working on the Snorkel again, Before, i had it just run to the high point inside the fender. this is going to be very similar to What CamoDown has done to his rig, Except a little different at the End.
Hidden snorkle

What i really like to do is, relocate the ECU and have the snorkel breath behind the Dash.

10-23-2015

Today i finished my Hidden Snorkel.

So i decided to place the end to the snorkel in the cowl on the left side of the hood hinge, Just so i can keep it away from the vents in on the cowl near the wipers, cause i dont like the idea relocating it, just to have it exposed to rain.
I started by cutting off the mount for the ac/heat fan assembly

I then used a 2.5" hole saw to cut into it. that Grey wall inside is actually a vent used for the cabin air filter, But lets call it the AC/Heat vent, that's where the air from your heater vents come from before it hits the cabin air filter. The water from the holes in the cowl travel out and around that vent without getting inside, So you can say its safe to take air from that area, cause on a rainy day during monsoon season, or wheeling in dangerously deep water, Ive never seen water come into my blower fan and all onto my floor.

I then placed a 90 degree elbow inside facing upwards, the elbow sits a little higher than the AC/Heat vent and thats awesome cause water will not fill the cowl or drip from above into the snorkel. I had to trim the elbow a certain way to fit it, and Push on the wall of the vent to get it in place.that shouldn't hurt anything But as long as you dont break a hole in any rubber caulk seal stuff, you should be fine. you can see the rubber caulk like stuff in the previous photo

Then measuring, cutting, making sure everything fits into place

Lastly. I painted the pvc piping black, and placed a bead of caulk around where i cut. I also made a little bracket to replace the one i cut off, just to keep the Fan assembly from shaking around, U can see it bolted from the Fan assembly to one of the hood hinge bolts.

So Yes this is almost exactly like previous member have already posted
except with one main difference the pvc pipe that leads into the cowl has a more reliable placement. Explained here.

In the Blue is the vent where the AC/Heat pulls air. it is elevated about 2"-2.5" Pointed Upward, The water what seeps into the cowl through the holes on top is directed down and around the vent, meaning no water gets into the vent

In the White, is where i placed the End of my snorkel Also pointing upward, and is slightly higher if not the same height inside, having the same placement as the ac/heat vent it should have the same effect, drawing air from above while water is directed around and below the pvc

In the Red is how previous members has placed theirs, as you can see in the link i posted earlier in this thread. It is at a downturn since upward in that location is a bad idea, But also being down turned it it has a chance to suck up water in the cowl as water is being collected.

So let me explain how the cowl works.
The cowl is designed of that of a house gutter, the water comes in from the top holes, the water then travels down the gutter and out into the fender. So keep in mind, in order for the water to actually get into the PVC snorkel or inside ac/heat vent, the cowl or gutter, would have to completely fill up with water, And for that to happen the drain ports inside the fenders would completely clog up or your just in a lake or water above your hood.

TESTING:
Testing was a Success, Whats a better way to test it than trying to flood it.
SO this is what we did, I had my buddy sit in the drivers seat and pulse to throttle and rev up the engine for a real time effect.
Myself was standing over the truck, with a Full 5 gallon Bucket of water,
as my buddy was revving the engine, i then poured all 5 gallons directly into the cowl area.
The result was that the air-box had not taken up any water what-so-ever.
The 5 gallons is a little overkill, but why not take it to the extreme when your testing something to save your engines life.

I want to thank Camodown , and i also want to Thank you FRF

Im that crazy idiot you see driving through creeks and rivers

Made a oops, couldn't figure out why my right side headlights turn signal or anything would work properly, turns out when making the hole for the snorkel to come back into the fender I accidentally cut the main ground for then entire right side lights. Ground was located behind the cruise control modal

I think we need a Uwharrie trip soon to test this. Granted there is only one spot provided it is deep enough but we should go soon anyway.

That stinks because I was kinda itching to go this weekend. I'm free most weekends so hit me up whenever.

Looks like you put a lot of thought into it. My only question is this; is it pulling in through the cowl at the base of the windshield? And if so, won't water get dumped into it every time it rains? I understand it is not pulling from the bottom of the cowl vent.

The cowl in the years of my ranger is already pretty sealed, basically the snorkel pulls air from the same place your ac/heat fan pulls from, these may be ford's but they wouldn't design the ac/heat system to take in water every time it rains

I made it a downturn inside the cowl to also help keeping water out.

Cool. One final question, and maybe you covered it and I just missed it, but where do you put the gate valve?

the gate vale is on the front side of the the airbox, replacing the old air inlet,
Camodown talks more about the gate valve here.Hidden snorkle

One side effect I noticed is since it's right where the heater draw air from, you can hear whoosh, whistle and suction of the throttle behind the passenger airbag, may be annoying for most, but personally i actually like the sound for some reason, makes me want to speed lol
