Custom Shocks for lifted trucks
Hello again FRF, Im here to show you how i made my lifted shocks, this is what i been doing for two years now and they havent failed me since,
do this at your own risk, if you want
I am using the Cheapo Gabriel shocks you can buy at autozone for $21.99. Arguments of not being cost effective are invalid, it's less than half the price of anything, and it works.
This Mod/build is for people like me whom cannot afford big name expensive shocks or like to build their own shit.
This is how i compensated for maxing my torsion bars and gained 3.5-4" lift
My truck 2000 ford ranger 4x4, Max Torsion bar lift. When maxing torsion bars the stock shocks are slightly too short and every bump will slam the shock to max extension causing stress on ball joints and damage the shock.
Warning. I am not liable for any damage to your shock or yourself during.
I wont go into depth with every step, mainly cause im tired of typeing already and im lazy.
Here is the Stock shock. Max Extention length is 18.25"
I started with the cut roughly halfway.
Found my length needed and cut to add
Welded and shaved
Made a sleeve to fit over for added strength and make it look better
Made sure there was enough stickout to weld
welded and almost ready
Warning when welding be careful not to expose the gas tube to, too much heat, let it cool down between welds. Tube can become damaged and potentially explode under heat and pressure
there it is ready to paint
Painted and ready to be installed
This part i felt was inportant for me, Just in case the shock was ever to fail, also i dont like maxing my shocks, Helps make them last longer.
I used already existing holes in the frame and made a new hole in the lower, The strap i used is a 14" 6ply 9,000lb limit strap, A little overkill but should last me a while before it starts to stretch.
I found that long of a strap is still in the safe range of flex before my ball joints get stressed or cv axles start to bind.
There ya go, Sorry for some pics being sideways, my phone is a dick
Any questions, comments
Thank you

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
I have a feeling a lot of people aren't going to like that. That aside, as long as you're a good welder, and you're sure they penetrated properly, i think this is a great idea.

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
That's a point I should've mentioned, this all depends on the skill of who is welding it. Being sutch an important part to your suspension you won't want to make that mistake,
I on the other hand am confident in my welds, being a welder for the US army lol.
My last set I made 2 years ago, I used a $90 harbor frieght welder and those welds did not fail with such a low end welder, the reason why I bought new shocks is for regular maintenance purposes. I was sure this time to take pictures to share with my FRF family

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
Why not just buy longer shocks? Especially if you're replacing them anyway. I cant believe that buying shocks that are a little longer than stock would cost so much more that, welding your own would be cost effective.

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
To be honest, I never really looked to buy longer shocks or anything actually, after I made the body lift, I made the rear shackles, torsion bar lift, then went from there... I spent $10 for all the materials from home depot, along with spare metal I can probably make 3 more sets. I feel like 4" longer shocks cost more that $55
Shocks (2) $42
Material. $10
Shocks as long as I want $Priceless

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
Hell, cause I'm bored and don't have a grand to spend on it, I might as well start making my own superlift kit.

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
haha good point lol. i haven't put any thought into it yet, and probably wont lol, I seen people do coil-over conversion lift and use the stock knuckle/spindle with a custom upper control arm . But they are using some serious equipment and im working out of my backyard lol.
----------
lol look at this crazy looking control arm

Re: Custom Lift Shock Build
you shouldnt need 3-4 inches longer. you havent changed anything suspension wise

Im sorry i never clarified this earlier, After maxing the torsion bars the stock shocks did not reach to bolt up, like at all... /w stock keys. if i attempted to, it would compress the torsion bars. and we all know what that would cause, Saggy bars, Unwanted positive and negative tention at ball joints causing premature wear, just not good stuff.... that was the reason for me to do this, al of this. Finding the max that the cv's could handle under stress ended up being at a greater distance than the stock shocks wich are 18.25", and thats good enough reason for me to get/make longer shocks, being past what everyone does with their torsion bars, Im sitting at about 3.5" 4" Lift with a torsion bar crank

I don't have time to do research for you but you can find some if you look hard enough. When I decided that I wanted to run air shocks up front, Monroe told me they didn't make any for front aplications. I took the specs for the stock shocks and browsed through their master catalogue until found a compatible set. They have are slightly longer than stock but still compress to the same length. They ended up being rear shocks for a 57 bel-air. So if you want longer shocks just browse the catalogue until you find what meets your needs.
btw: I would not recommend running your suspension at such extreme angles.
