Pipe Size For Snorkel?
I'm planning on building a snorkel for my truck after the last evenings' playtime (long story short, my air filter was soaked so bad that it was suffocating the engine and had to dry it out with my buddies exhaust for 20mins). I've seen a couple pics of Rangers with snorkels and have my plans pretty much thought out, but haven't found what size PVC piping they're using, and can't decide what size I should use. I'm thinking anywhere from 2"ID to 3"ID. If anyone has done this before or has an idea which size I should use, I'd like to hear it.

That's why you run it hidden.
I run 2" just cause that's as big as it fits with my setup & it is only run through the snorkel when I need it. Ideally 3" would be the choice if you wanted a full time snorkel.

Sounds cool!
I don't really want to spend $300 on a snorkel, is not a show truck and it just needs to be functional. I'm good at prettyin stuff up. I did find this one though

There was a guy who used 3" flex pipe and got it to fit behind his fender on an older ranger.

I will find parts. I will find money. And I will find mud.
I actually read your build thread around 6A.M. this morning. Beautiful truck man!

Re: Pipe Size For Snorkel?
Im sorry.. but if your gonna do it.. do it right or dont.
There is quite a bit of engineering that goes into your factory airbox and plumbing and for all the right reasons. Meanwhile your going to entrust your "baby", "Automotive Investment" to $30 worth of parts?
I could understand if you were fabbing something up as a mock up but I dont care if West Coast Customs built me a PVC snorkel.. I wouldnt trust it.
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech...RB_snorkel.htm
Would be your best example, If you havent already, extending the breather tubes on the axles, trans, to a higher place in the truck should be attended too as well. Only other thing to protect would be the coil pack.
Dont get me wrong, im all about saving a few bucks here and there because what we do, or any hobby for that matter isnt cheap.. but if your truck is your daily grinder, why not put the money and effort into it?
Putting $40k into an already $50k truck isnt going to get you $80k for your truck. But if you have a truck you only paid $3-4k for and you dump $8k into it without being a hack, you could get a fair return on your investment, at least more than you paid for the truck.

No disrespect, I do understand your point of view, but I pretty much hate the snorkel look altogether. Originally I planned on just buying a scrap fender and airbox and switching the two out when I go out. The only reason I need a snorkel is because my intake is almost completely exposed with my current setup and gets soaked when I dip into holes I think are a little shallower than they are, so it just needs to be relocated temporary when I go muddin. The hidden snorkel seems easy enough, fits what I need, and doesn't cut a hole in my fender, which is great. I won't be dumping 3-4k in this truck, especially since if I had that kind of money to toy with I'd just buy a 1st Gen to beg and Jack up and keep my DD on the road

I understand, i wasnt trying to come off as ****y as it sounded. I just hate seeing people sometimes waste money on something fruitless if there's a better idea or product that could be had, especially when it comesvto reliability concerns and im a stickler for presentation and aesthetics... i just wish i knew how to paint, i dislike the blue on my truck. Lol

What are you talking about? The idea he wants to do increases his reliability and it does nothing to hurt his aesthetics cause you can't see it. Not everyone wants an ugly ass snorkel hanging out of there fender and very few actually need one.
Cross any rivers lately where your hood was submerged?

The purpose of a snorkel kit, despite its perhaps unappealing aesthetics is to put the air intake up high, with as least amount of mechanical interferences as possible with a solid material (granted PVC was suggested but Ive seen wondrously shitty things out of drier vent materials). For what was mentally pictured changed nothing other than trying to breath out your ears vs your nose or mouth. Neat trick but not much of a huge benefit.
On top of that I personally don't see " A SNORKEL" kit looking all that bad considering I've seen people carry the PVC outside of the fender
and up the A-pillar that some people inherently are proud of, e.g. http://www.therangerstation.com/Maga.../offroad.shtml
Furthermore, he didn't have water ANYWHERE up to and flowing over his hood either and he was having a "dry condition" issue with his filter as it was, so your last point is moot... I've also seen people hydrolock a car/even a stock S10 just going through a puddle big enough to do so, no where near the precept thoughts of fording the river Kwai...
Your only legit argument is the aesthetics (barely), I GET IT... and if nothing else, cost factors of having to shell out $400 for what I think is a nice kit as shown in my previous post links vs a puzzle kit of misc PVC elbows and reducers.
