Interchangeable Camper Shells?
I'm planning on a cross-country drive in the next few months and need a camper shell to cover everything I'm going to be hauling in the bed. In preparation, I've been scouring Craigslist for a cheap shell. Trouble is, there are very few shells for sale that originally came off of a Ranger.
I need to know if anyone has used camper shells from another small pickup on their Ranger, and how well it fit.
I just found one off of a late '90s or early 2000s Toyota Tacoma Ext. Cab. The seller didn't post any measurements (few do), and hasn't yet responded to my email. So I thought I'd post here and maybe get some ideas as to what might fit (if not perfectly, at least decently).
I have a 2003 FX4 Ext. Cab, short bed.

Re: Interchangeable Camper Shells?
Where in Cali are you? I see cheap shells down here on there often. Remember any Ranger 93+ will work.

Re: Interchangeable Camper Shells?
I'm in Visalia.
I just started searching in earnest this past week. I see quite a few in Fresno, but none specifically identified as being off a Ranger. There are quite a few Toyotas, however. But I have no idea as to the size of the Tacoma's bed.

Have had two on mine, and never had any problems.
The last was a CL find for 75.00 with windows, for a longbed. See avatar.b

At this point, it's just a Leer 100R. lol. The options I'm after are the opening and sliding side windows, roof net, roof rails, and third brake light. Need to run and gab with the local Leer place on prices.
I think I may just go new when I get this job.
Here's pretty much what I'm after...minus the side slides and rails.

Re: Interchangeable Camper Shells?
Still looking. I plan on going to some dealers in the coming weeks in search of a used shell. My trip is still a couple of months away, so I still have a little time.
I should have purchased a camper before I moved to CA. I wasn't thinking. When I came out, I tied a tarp over the bed to cover my junk. After nearly 3,000 miles, that did not do wonders for the paint on my bed; sooo many scuffs and scratches.
FXWannabe01, a few days ago, I'm almost certain a saw a Leer cap exactly like the one you're describing. It was used and priced at about $600. It looked like it was in great shape, but it was a little too big for a Ranger and well out of my price range anyway.

Re: Interchangeable Camper Shells?
Where can I find a roof net anyway?
I'm not sure about your areas there, but toppers are a dime a dozen in Colorado on Craigslist-you might try it.
