Default 4x4 models? Im confused

So I have a 98 2wd with the 4x4 switch. So my truck does not have the official 4x4 sticker and rightfully so. I have seen other trucks of this same exact model (with the switch) that do have the emblem. So my question is what are all the varying models and which ones are labeled with 4x4 and why?

To my knowledge, Ford only put switches and the 4x4 stickers on 4x4s. If your 2wd has them, they are probably aftermarket and put there by the previous owner.

Ford never put a 4x4 switch in the 2wd trucks. If yours has a switch than your radio bezel has been changed to one with the switch or you have 4x4 and never knew it.

True story.

I was with a friend in his early 2000s GMC fullsize a few years ago. We were on the interstate doing about 75 mph when he says "I need to take the truck in to have it checked out. There's something wrong with the 4x4. When I put it in, it pulls to the right really hard." He then proceeded to hit the 4x4 button at 75 mph.

I nearly had a heart attack.

Pretty much every truck made since the 80's has a shift on the fly 4x4 system. While its not suggested to engage it at speeds over 55, as long as all 4 wheels are going the same speed and you are going straight the truck is not going to explode engaging 4x4 at highway speeds.

Oh I have definitely used it. Used it in the last snow storm and some some mud before.. The 4x4 module is there, so maybe my truck had options and it was installed at the time of original purchase?

Wish I seen this. It's something I'd be dumb enough to do..

That's how you ruin your transfer case and axels...find out if you have a transfer case first...

Some cars are two wheel drive and have a "4x4 assist option" I assumed since there was no identification on my truck that this may be the case. I do not know all of the ford models and that is why I'm asking.
