Default Rustproofing and Ford's cheap chassis paint

I bought my 2010 Ranger last summer. Being in the N.E. Ohio rust belt, I wanted to rustproof the underside. After much research, I decided to use Fluid Film for rustproofing. It is a lanolin based product with no solvents. It has to be applied annually. It worked really nice. Here's my problem. I started to prepare the truck for a new coat of fluid film and the pressure washer blew the paint off of the frame in spots. No problem. Just touch it up with POR 15, right? Nope. As I wiped the frame down, more paint came off, as if it never adhered. I took the truck to the Ford dealer and they sumitted a claim to Ford which was denied. They said the problem was the result of "outside influences" the photos showed etching on the bare metal. The dealer is still going to repair the paint, no charge. My thoughts are Ford uses cheap chassis paint and the fluid film had nothing to do with the paint coming off. Has anyone else experienced the chassis paint washing off?

I can see why they would denie it, did you research to see if anyone else had this problem only after using that stuff? I would maybe ask the dealer what they would recomend.

Ford and other's could rust proof the crap out of there vehicles but they don't...otherwise you would never buy a new one...good for business...bad for consumer

Dude! it's only 6 years old...give it time...it will fall apart on you unless you keep on top of it.

Thats a Chevy...they skimp on rust proofing more than anybody. My truck spent most of it's life in Ohio...Now I live in Florida i'm fixing and repairing all the damage that the Salt, Calcium Chloride and Fly ash that they throw on the roads up there...i'm sure they throw the same shit on the roads in Canada...maybe my truck was finished on a friday afternoon...and yours was on a tuesday?

only reason the paint would come off is if it was hit with some paint thinner, or some product that contains acetone, or any other harmful chemicals for paint. I seriously don't think it's the Fords paints' fault haha.

Been using a mixture of boiled lnseed oil and WD40, 50/50 with a finger spritz pump sprayer on my 11 Ranger. 2nd year for if it n upstate NY. Still looks new underneath. Sure wished that I had done it with my 00.

I'll let you know how that works out in 10 years.

Im a big fan of POR15... coat the whole frame, spray paint another coat of rustoleon or equal ontop of that (plus anywhere you couldn't get the POR by brush) and your good to go for years. Just wash it a couple times a month and it will last a long time...

i cant believe how many people dont do an undercarriage wash atleast once a month... is it really that hard? just saying

Even after all the rust was scraped off my frame, there was still spots where the paint was still in tact. After that it was painted in POR-15

----------

Oh and I think in certain areas they offer undercoating. Mine had a rubberized undercoating on it until it started to bubble up and crumble off.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I told the service manager what I used on the undercarriage last year so he would have an idea on how to prep the frame for paint, and he said to bring it along and he would have his guy re-spray the frame with it when they are finished. This dealership is really going out of their way to keep me happy, even though I didn't even buy the truck there. Classic Ford, Mentor Ohio.
