OE fender flares and RUST
I noticed there was a little rust peeking out from under my left rear fender flare. I thought it might just be a small spot, but when I pulled the flare I found this:
What options do I have? I can live with this as long as it doesn't spread. Touch up can hide the little speck that shows when the flare is on. But what do I do? My truck is so clean except for this spot! I just want it gone.

That's why I don't want to take mine off because I'm scared of what's under them

I know exactly how you feel. I was the same way. I was not happy when I found this mess.
I live in Utah where everything rusts. BUT, it is common here to see an older ranger with no rust. I just figured rangers were built better to withstand the road salt. I think they are because this is the only spot....knock on wood.

Grind it out and repaint it. Or use a something like por15 and retouch it. It well slow it down but might not stop it forever.

Here is what I am thinking. I will take a dremel with a wire wheel and grind out the rust. It doesnt look deep so I think I can get it all. Then paint over the spot with POR-15 or something similar. Then just use my touch up to hide whatever will show with the flare back on. I know it will not look perfect... But I would imagine this would really slow it down, right?

I'm thinking about going to take one of mine off just to see how bad it is before it gets worse. Do they come off just by pulling those fasteners inside the wheel Wells? Then can I reuse the fasteners?

Ill be honest. I broke so much crap taking mine off. I was going to take all 4 of mine off until I had the ugly experience of doing just one. The truck and flare are ok. But I am going to need a whole new new set of hardware. I do need to figure out how to get new stuff. I might have to just make some generic clips work. I will probably end up using some 3m double-sided tape to make up the difference. I wish my truck did not have flares at all. I do not mind the body lines without them. If it werent for the holes, i would probably pull all of mine off.

Re: OE fender flares and RUST
Well i took a dremel to it! I was able to get most of the rust out. There was some deep pitting in the center, but I didnt worry too much about it. I am not foolish enough to think that this will stop the rust, but I hope i put a wrench in the works.
Here is what it looks like now after the 2nd coat of por-15. That is messy stuff! I went crazy with it because the flare will cover it.
Now to put the flares back on.... Any advice?

Re: OE fender flares and RUST
Taking flares on and off isn't difficult at all if you have the right tool. As far as putting them back on, seat the green clips on the inside of the fender flare, then line them up with the holes on the fender and firmly press on the flare to pop them in one by one. Follow that up by putting the black clips back into the holes on the underside of the flare and bed.

Just wondering if there is a way to rust proof under the flares without taking them off and waxing under them. I live in nova scotia right next to the Atlantic ocean and I think rust is inevitable

They used some kind of paint on Trucks! on spike tv that is supposed to neutralize rust after you grind it down.
