Default Tail Gate doesn't open properly

Question for you all, my tail gate dosent open properly, i have to lift up from the underneath right corner and smack it to try to open it, i constantly hace to do this anytime i need to put does the tail gate, and evertime i do it, it takes a few wacks to open and its very frustrating, almost pulled the handle out yesterday trying to open it. any ideas on what the problem might be?

Maybe try lubing up the latches and take the panel off the tailgate and lube up everything in there. Is it hitting your bumper on the bottom maybe? I know mine hits sometimes because my bumper mounts are screwed up but it doesn't effect it opening

Ive lubed the ends up a bit, but next would be inside access panel. then, if not i have no idea what it could be

I just fixed the latch on my 91 beater. It doesnt have an access panel like the newer trucks have, I had to pull the latch off the center, pull the linkages out from each side of the tailgate and clean and lube everything. Even after that the lever would not pull the latches from the catch far enough to let the gate open. I adjusted the catches that are mounted to each bedside. I couldnt find any adjustment of the linkage inside.

You dont have to cut anything. The latch is held in by a couple screws, the linkages snap into the center latch mechanism.

If I remember correctly there is adjustment for the linkages inside the access panel. You may just have to adjust them because of them wearing down

My 99 tail gate is really tight and doesn't drop and is really hard to close. Seems like it's too far to the right side of the bed. How do I go about adjusting that?

Mine did something similar so I took off the plastic liner from the inside of it and took out a metal plate to show the springs and latches and wd40'd the hell outta that bitch and it works like new.

Mine did something similar but it was a little plastic clip that held a rod in place, it was broken, so a ziptie fixed that. Been going strong for over a year and a half.
