Default ranger-mazda bed swap

My son just bought a sweet 98 B2500 for 500 bucks. Runs, drives great, but the right rear bed panel is crushed and the bed floor is buckled. Luckily the frame is fine. My question is can we put a ranger bed in its place, preferably a stepside if we can find one? Thanks from an old Bronco II owner.

Yep....as long as it's the same bed length. 93+ shortbeds, regardless of style, are all interchangeable. I think Mazda Rangers are all shortbed. Body lines will all line up, but one downside is the wheel arch will be a little different.

You will however, need to either run the Mazda taillight harness and Ranger 93-99 3-bulb tails, or switch some wires around and run the newer 00+ 2-bulb tails. Mazda and Ranger tails are not interchangeable (can't run ranger tails on a mazda bed and vice versa).

Direct bolt on, and if I'm not mistaken, all you need is the harness for the tails that came with the bed. I believe all the connectors will match up. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

That's all dependant on the year of the donor bed and where the donor bed was made. Even new '08 Rangers, are prewired for 3 bulb tails, while others made somewhere else do not. My 01 is prewired while my brothers isn't.

Thanks for all the info. I really want to find a mazda bed but this opens it up for alot of options, will make it easier to get a decent bed on it. I drove it and then told him I would give him his money back on it. (I would pay $1000 easy). Can you believe he declined?

The Mazda shares the same bed as a Ranger STX, I believe the years of Mazda are 99 up and the Ranger STX is 05 up.......

Thanks again for all the info. We went to Pick-n-pull sat. Was shocked by the prices they wanted for bare bed, no tailgate, taillights-$350. Maybe for a perfect bed,i.e. no dents, scratches, but not for the crap they had. O well, I'll keep looking.

In Arkansas? LOL!

For what it's worth, tha'ts about the going rate for even a dented bed or one that needs some work. $350 ain't bad. For a good one with no blemishes, it's gonna be around $500 starting price unfortuantely. Of course, it's all dependant on the yard and how long the truck has been in inventory. Also, scope out craigslist.

Check out www.car-part.com. It's an online database of many junkyards and their inventories and asking prices. It's where I found my '06 4.0 w/ 1,000 miles for a a grand.
