You do NOT need anything 1/2" thick on your Ranger. That's overkill. Your frame will rip before that. Except for maybe the tow points with shackles. You do need to tie into the original bumper mounts (frame horns) and have another piece run over the top of that and tie into the frame farther back.

alright so just bolt on the 1/2 on to the mounts then build a frame for the bumper and then weld the outside part on

Wanna do it the easy way, just take your measurements add all the angles and when you go to get your steel have them cut to size, take it home and weld it up!, you can even do rolled corners if you like!
Anything you can Imagine You can Build!
If your really doin nothing but a look change then 1/8th steel is plenty! Even for a working bumper, just reinforce critical points!
