Default Help! Ticket blues.

One night I was attending a car/truck meet here in Central Illinois, I was parked and had my under-glow on well I went to leave and turned it off but accidentally left my wheel well lights osculating. I was pulled over once I realized the mistake and shut them down. I was charged with Class A misdemeanor, along after being held out past curfew a curfew ticket. I was in full accepting of both tickets until I learned that I was charged for having red and blue flashing lights and pulling people over. I had only my wheel well lights on for not even 4 blocks. I would have a possible 1 year in prison and a HUGE fine. Being 17 that is the scariest thing to ever happen to me! Since I did not have red flashing lights and I was not pulling people over can I fight to at-least lower the charge? Or am I just shot out of luck?

Your young. I would uninstall the lights and take them to court with you. explain to judge you didn't know they were illegal and you removed after finding out. Then reinstall after court if you like them so much. I would get a lighted toggle switch to remind you to turn them off.

Seems to me like possibly an overzealous police officer. I can understand having "illegal" lights and being out past curfew and the seriousness of the situation, but I would think that it would have to be proven that you were intentionally pulling people over. Did anyone in front stop? It sounds to me like you are going to need a lawyer to help you. If you haven't been in trouble before, then I would like to believe the judge wouldn't throw you in jail for a year and heavily fine you. This type of thing can can carry with you for life, so I would seriously get with your parents, find a lawyer, and go from there. This isn't a regular speeding ticket that the average person can fight by themself in traffic court.

This is my very first ticket, It was one of the officers the town calls "The Tolono Gestapo" I had to contact my mother along with someone to drive my truck home, we are also looking for an attorney at the moment. I am already coming to the conclusion I will lose my license for at-least 2 months. I also plan on popping out the fuses to show they can not turn on with out them, I may wire in an "oh-shit switch" into both the under-glow control box and wheel wells. On the bright side the officer said he was impressed by the work for someone my age. I told him "I was proud of them until now".

My (step-brother) was in this situation but he was actually pulling people over. He had bought a blue and red strobe lights and put them on his dash. He had done this many times. As he never got caught by the cops but some guy got his plate #. Sheriff came to his house and he was 18 at the time. But they only gave him community service. The only way then can put you in jail is if when you pull them over, you get out of the vehicle.

^this may not be relevant, but what I'm trying to say is your definitely not going to jail.

Yeah being a first ticket, and I'd you admit to the first two offenses (out past curfew and lights on while driving) but deny the third of pulling people over, I'm sure they'll disregard it of the judge has any common sense.

I dot understand why people even bother with blue/red custom lights. Seems not worth the risk IMO. But to each his own.

I suggest a lawyer. Clearly the charges do not match your intent. And this was not the intent of the law either. I think when you go to court, logic will prevail and it will be reduced to something more realistic.

I was hoping that it would, my mother called the district attorney and he said at most I may get 1 year in prison and/or a $50,000 fine.. I hope it is dropped to something more realistic. The custom blue lighting is just something I really like, some people hate it but to me it just makes it stick out at night. I don't cruise around with it on. It was a god honest mistake and I'm paying the price for it.

Hopefully it gets reduced man. Pretty harsh penalty if you ask me.

But with no proof, and a lawyer, I'm sure you'll be fine.

That is the maximum penalty for the classification of misdemeanor. And DA's office is just quoting the standard maximum penalty response because they can't go into detail about what may or may not happen on the phone with your mother. Don't let that scare you. What you actually end up with be more like a $200 ticket for improper lighting.

Class a? Damn! Dui is a class b here that's some BS I'd fight it. Just on principle alone, I mean if you weren't pulling people over.
