Default Check out this rust damage... need some advice!

First off, I love my truck! It's old (2000, 121k miles), but the engine is tight, the AC is cold, and the heat is, well, hot. However, I always struggle with putting money into repairs (esp. cosmetic ones)... so I'm reaching out to the braintrust here!

Is the rust damage in these pictures feasible to repair? I'm in the northeast (Syracuse), so there's rust creep along most of the frame, but this spot on the lower portion of the passenger side body panel (below the pop-out window) is really what's the most noticeable. Otherwise the body is in pretty good shape.

Although I appreciate all the do-it-yourself'ers input, I don't have the time or ability to make this repair myself. What I really want to know is could a reputable body shop fix this for a couple hundred bucks or is that wishful thinking? Anyone have an idea about how much I'd be looking at for a repair? I don't need it to like it just rolled off the assembly line, I just want to do something with this rust. Extra points if anyone can recommend a decent shop in Central New York!

Thanks so much guys I look forward to any responses!

Chris

Thanks for the quick reply, but I don't quite follow... what do you mean with "bed liner"?

^x2 scrape the paint off where the cancer is, and sand down the rust to bare metal and get a can (or roll-on) bed liner.

What he means is u use bed liner, like herculiner, line-x, etc to coat it and cover it up and make it last longer.

First, is it rusted thru? Any holes, etc? If yes, then the best course is to cut out the bad section and have a new patch welded in, then repaint, and then coat with bedliner.
Click the link in my sig, go to the 1999 Ranger pics gallery, look for pics of my bed, bed caps, and my truck sides/rocker panels. You will see how I herculined it.

I wouldn't recommend just coating over the rust spots, clean it and get it smooth and nice. But this herculiner will help prevent rust, but it can also trap rust, and u don't want that.

Any other questions, let me know.

As u can see in this pic I went up to the first contour line, some people have even gone up to the second line, for more coverage. U can buy herculiner in black, grey, white, red, and other colors. Its not only great for beds, but tons of places. One guy on here did his whole red ranger with red herculiner, tough stuff.

this happened to me, except yours is extensive, it looks as if it rusted through i would suggest having a shop cut and weld in a new piece of sheet metal.. probably looking at around 5 or 600 dollars.

OK... bed liner spray looks to be an option since the truck is black and the spray would sort-of match. Don't feel confident doing all that myself though (cutting it out, welding in new, sanding it, etc.) so I'd be looking for a body shop to do it. Not sure if it's clear in the photos, but basically it is rusted behind the paint there, and it appears that piece would flake off if I pulled it. Not sure of the technical term. With regard to having it cut out, welded, etc... do you think $5-600 for repair would include painting? If you move forward from that spot in the picture, the paint is bubbling there, I'd say in total it's about 15 inches or so that might need work. Fortunately, the other side doesn't have this damage and looks pretty good for a 12 year old truck. Thanks again!

----------

gcextreme--I checked out your truck on your profile, that spray looks like it could work for me. do you think a body shop would do that work for me? Is it even possible since the spot in question is ready to flake away?

Appreciate all the help!

Also, I don't like the fact that u called your 2000, "OLD".
My truck is a 1999, one year older than yours, lol.

And a side note, I live in Minnesota, we use salt on our roads, and Im guessing in NY they do too?? In either case, my truck doesn't have that much rust, probably because I wash it alot.

I have seen other newer trucks with alot of rust, this guy I met at subway had a 2004 Ranger, and his doors and tailgate were rusted like crazy, he told me he NEVER washes it.

----------

If u go this route and bed line it, do both sides all along the bottom of the truck.
As for having a body shop paint it, I wouldn't bother having it professionally painted if u are going to use the bed liner, u will end up sanding it to make the bedliner adhere to it.
I would just mask it off, and spray can paint it with primer then black paint, for like $15, then sand it a bit and apply the bed liner over it.

Im not sure about applying bed liner to bare metal, but I think u could.

LOL, ok, how about I call it "vintage" then!

Anyway, yes we use salt here in the 'Cuse. I only bought the truck in January 2011, and I've been fanatical about keeping it washed in winter, especially when the roads are being salted, but I doubt the previous owner(s) cared as much. I do it to try and slow the rust creep as best I can... I want to drive this truck for awhile and really want to deal with this rust issue before the piece falls off on it's own...

The answer I am about to give is not only the answer you want to hear but in your case most likely the most logical answer for you. You should run a search for body shops on google, or what would be even better is get on craigslist and do a search for local automotive painters in your area. Whoever you come up with (should be several different candidates) e-mail them the photos that you posted in this thread and they will be able to quote you. I'm in the wrecking yard business and I have delt with body shops for the past 10 years. $500-$600 is steep however that may possibly be what they will quote you just keep in mind their quote is always on the high side and they leave it open for price to be negotiated but you have to be smart enough to negotiate. They will make a huge deal about the rust but just tell them you don't care you just want it painted over (as long as the rust is not going all the way to the floor pan)

Hey, thanks Bobbyd... thanks for the reply, and I'm going to do what you suggested as well! By the way, I lived out in SoCal too (near Hwood) for 14 years (thru late 2010). Dang, I miss cars with no rust!!!!

If you have something to add, keep the replies coming guys... I'm an information junkie and will use any and all of it to figure this sh*t out! Will post updates when i do.

Thank you!!!

I will add the following info for u.

If u bed line it, try to bed line the other side of the under body part too, not just the pretty outside, or rust will just attack from that side.
Right now I only have the outsides done. But I plan on removing my bed and doing all the underneath too. As for my cab, I will roll on what I can, and then get the spray can bedliner for the rest, more projects for this summer.
One guy on here actually took his cab off to do under it, and he also did his whole frame!

Yeah rust free in California for the most part. I lived in Santa Monica CA for 4 years and that is a whole different world from Riverside CA even though they are only roughly 50 miles away from each other. I can't imagine living in New York would be crazy.

GC -- I actually have seen that post where the guy did his whole frame... that's nuts! The bed liner is a great option. If I do go that way I may have a body guy prep both sides (inside and out) for me and just hit it with the liner. Don't think I would do the whole frame though--even though it could probably use it.

Bobbyd -- Syracuse is a good ways from NYC (about four hours by car) so I'd compare it to living in Bakersfield vs. LA! lol

Yeah I see NY and I automatically think NYC for some reason. When people see CA they probably think Los Angeles or San Fransisco. You put it in perspective for me with a good comparison.
