----------

Restorer won't put the color back on the plastic that has faded to white. The question remains what type of automotive finish is compatible with the plastic flares (that won't eat the plastic)?

Worth reviving because we're all suffering from this now.

Has anyone tried plastidip in more modern times?

My answer doesn't directly answer your question, but more of the original question at hand.

I always use Dupli-Color Trim and Bumper Paint.

I first started using it on my first car, which was a 1989 and had plenty of faded trim pieces. I used it on metal and plastic trim as well as a foam factory spoiler/wing. After about 13 years the paint on the metal trim has finally chipped off in a few places and could use a new coat, but they aren't nearly bad enough to mess with at this point.

I have also done the grille in the Ranger. I was going to post a picture comparing the painted grille to the non painted bumper for reference, but apparently photobucket has now blocked me from posting my pictures as well (I had been able to post them even after others were having problems). I guess it's time to find somewhere new to host my pictures after all these years of using photobucket..

Yeah, photobucket really did a number with that move....

I'm assuming that it's a paint, essentially? so prep and spray like a paint?

I'm hoping plastidip will give me a good almost stock-like effect, without anywhere near the same prep or application effort, but, we'll see, i've had the can for ages, but have never used it.

Fusion works great on the flares and grille. I have used it myself with excellent results. My flares looked exactly like the OP. Removing the flares was no big deal, gave me a chance to do some rust proofing under the flares and fix some peeling paint under the flares that would have started rusting. Needed to buy new push pins for the flares from the dealer but so what.

Not sure why some have an aversion to using rattle cans on these old trucks. It does a great job and is cheap.

Earlier poster was correct. Do NOT sand the flares. Just clean them with denatured alcohol and paint. The new paint adheres to the old faded plastic very well. I did not use clear coat but I will next time.

My results.

I painted my grill black years ago.. (5-ish) with the stuff from Advance Auto Zone. Dupicolor perfect match series black and their clear coat. I used primer, paint, clear. I think 3-4 coats each. Still looks brand new today. Zero issues. My grill looked exactly like yours did (that ugly faded grayish color) I do remember popping the grill out of the grill surround was a bit of a pain in the ass but prepping and painting it was not hard at all.

I much prefer the look of the black grill as it makes the front end look so much nicer than the grayish color.

Apologies, I forgot the details. Yes, it is a spray paint. For prep on the grille, I just washed it really well to get everything off of it, ran over it with a scotch brite pad, washed and sat out to dry. After that I sprayed it and then let it sit to dry really well. I'm pleased with the results, I plan to do the bumper the same way when I get a little more time.
