On mine, you lift the wiper arm & blade up to about 90*, the spring inside should hold it up. There's a small retainer that needs to be pulled out a little at the base where it attaches to the motor & the entire wiper arm ass'y should come off.

I have to take both of mine off every year or so to sand & paint them. No matter what paint I use, they still want to get a clalky finish. I'm seriously considering swapping mine out with some others if one of the junkyard hunters can find a new set for me.

taking them off is really easy once you know how. like buggman said, just pull out on the little tab. and i would go with gloss black!

Thanks, i just didn't want to break anything, and i didn't know if it was all one piece or something. I have replaced the blades many times, but never could see how to remove the arm part.

I think gloss black too, its the simplest and cheapest.

I dunno, red would be something new & different. Not sure how it would hold up...can't be any worse than black.

I started doing mine 10+ years ago with gloss black, then I gave up & just spray it with satin or flat black now, mine always look like poo after a while anyhow

Not sure if it makes any difference if you swap the left for right side or not... I usually do one at a time.

factory was satin or semi-gloss. I usually redo mine every spring on full detail day

Are there any good aftermarket wiper arms that will enhance the look of my '96? Sounds like everyone is just re-painting theirs.
But if there's something out there that looks cool, I'd like to know about it.

If not, I'll just try repainting it gloss black. Any suggestions on a good paint that will adhere well and last a while?

I thought I was the only one that considered doing this. Now I don't feel like a weirdo.

Hey thanks guys! I figured it related to that little tab near the base of the arm - but that was so easy you can do it with one hand!

I picked up some trim paint from my auto-body paint store that I'm going to try: SEM Trim Black. We'll see if it works well or if I just spent $15 for a can of spray paint!

About a decade ago I used to have white covers that fit the lower half of the arm. Looked like these: Wiper Boots

There's quite the ranger around here, it has red wiper arms, radiator, calipers, drums, rims and all sorts of red oddities but the red wipers are pretty cool!

HELLO,gcextreme,
i wanted to do the same to mine, but didn't want to pull them off.so about a year ago,i took the blades off, taped newspaper on hood and and windshield.
sprayed krylon semi-gloss black,on what i could get to.
then i flipped them up,turned on wipers till they went to other side, turned key off, sprayed other side.they still look decent today.
i didn't want to break anything,or worry about getting them on the same spot they were either!!

Whenever i paint anything on my truck, i use flat black then gloss clear coat. Seems to hold up a lot better.

I just bought my 88 ranger and was looking to take off the wiper blades and paint em. I pulled the tab back where the motor is and tried pulling. neither one cam off. I sprayed wd-40 and even used pliers, but i didn't want to force them out. Any suggestions?
