Default Problem with wipers, 1994 ranger

Hey guys, i have a 94' Ranger and about a month ago the wipers started acting funny. What happens is whichever direction they are moving, it seems like once they get resistance(eg snow buildup or just a dry windshield) they stop moving and have to be tugged in whichever direction they were going (i have shoe laces coming through my windows right now heh).

At first i thought it was the motor, but i looked today and while the wipers are stuck the motor starts to vibrate a whole bunch and becomes loud until the wipers are given a tug and its back to normal. I talked to my dad and he said the rod they pivit on may be worn, and when i give it a tug the wipers catch again. Now the only way to check this i assume would be to remove the front cowl, and thats where my problem stands. Any idea on how to remove it, or anything i could try an diagnose?

Im going to be trying to sell the truck, and aside from these damn wipers everything is pretty mint. Im trying to avoid going the garage route as most places around here are charging atleast 80$/hour and being in school its an 80$ id rather save and have a weekend project.

Anywho thanks in advance for the help!

I have had alot of experiance with wiper motors through the FIRST Robotics program at our school. What you are hearing is probably the screw gear skipping on the unmoving worm gear. Its possible but unlikely that adding lubricant to the gearbox could help.
Do the wipers always get stuck in the same place?

You will not be able to remove the wiper motors from the back, they have 10-32 facemount screw on them. I'm not sure how you get to them on the ranger.

Another thing you can try is to lift up the hood and gently pry off the back piece of the gear box. It is a black plastic piece held on with little tabs to the metal part of the gearbox. Check the plastic worm gear for excessive wear.
