Default skidplate question

I cant remember if my truck came with factory front skid plates ( I believe I have factory gas tank skid plate) but If I do have one is it plastic or steel?

If I dont have a front skid plate would you recommend getting one out of a JY (steel) if so:
which years and trim level had steel skid plate (I know 98+ would fit)

what would be a good price for JY one.

Are they hard to remove, I know they have four screws or bolts but is it something I cant take off on the spot

Junk yard may be hit or miss and who knows if they will be mint.

It is just 4 bolts 2 in the front and 2 in the rear.

I would go with a steel one over plastic

I pulled mine off of my '00 before I sold it. Polished stainless steel, mounts with 4 bolts. Theyre pretty thin, so they're probably more for looks than protection.
These are from when I was painting my valence, but best pics I have of it.

Yeah I would want a steel one and paint it black, I know a few members on here sell them or make them but the price in shipping would kill me. So which 1998+ had factory steels? just the fx4?

I dont off road so it would be for looks as well as mild protection from highway use

Mine is from a 2000 XLT with the Off Road package, but I'm pretty sure they were also on '98's and '99's

98-2000 4wd trucks
2001-2006 FX4 LLevel II's, off road package trucks, FX4 trucks

Think that is most of them. I upgraded the bolts for mine to F350 turbo mounting bolts. They are more solid.

I have a 2011 4x2 Sport and noticed it didn't have a front skid plate either. According to all the brochures and Ford's website the 4x2 Sport is supposed to have a front skid plate from the factory. I went back to the dealership with the brochure and web site printed off. They agreed it should've been on there and ordered 1 and installed it. It's a black steel one.
