Default 4WD Sticking

Accidently turned my 4wd high on today after work, but immediately went through the steps of turning it off you know no problem. Still gripped a little bit but then quit, so I thought. Pulled into my driveway and it felt like 4wd was still engaged, but how and why? I been asking myself for many answers on how to fix this problem, but can't find a solution. Any advice and solutions would be much appreciated, with winter coming up this could be a big problem possibly. One thing I was told that the truck may need transfer case fluid, or just changed but that could be a false statement.

turn off truck and restart it. put in neutral to disengage if you roll down your window you should hear it engage and disengage..
