Rust proofing my Under carriage
ok, So my under carriage is pretty rusty due to the fact that up here in new england we have alot of salty and grimy roads (and its almost always wet) so i decided i will bite the dust and buy some POR15 ive heard this stuff works wonders. Not 100% sure on the results and was wondering what your opinions were on this. I will be cleaning the underside up tomorrow and i will probably brush this stuff on. so how should i go about prepping to get a nice bond between the metal and the por 15. i will use a wire brush and a needle scaler (to remove old undercoating). is there anything else i am missing?
edit: will have pics tmr

Re: Rust proofing my Under carriage
theres actually several pics, but yeah por-15 is the shit just don't get it on your face like i did. oh yeah and in your eye that reaaaaaalllllyyyy hurts. I would definetly rust proof your vehicle if you are planning on keeping it for an extensive amount of time.

I need to do this but don't have a garage to get this done.
Does anyone know how much it would be to get someone to do this for me?

Re: Rust proofing my Under carriage
You should've body-lifted it while you had the bed off!

Re: Rust proofing my Under carriage
This took me maybe close to 20 hours to do. it was a two day process for me, i would definitely wait for a sunny day to allow your prep to dry fully. this would cost a fortune to have somebody for it for you because of the labor costs alone.
i plan on doing a body lift somewhere in the future! will decide after some bigger tires!
new rear bumper was put on when i had done my add a leaf kit, check out my albums, they're in there!
----------
oh, and costs to me was about $65 a quart of por-15 along with the prep, gets half of your frame roughly. i also went over everything with rubberized undercoat!

Re: Rust proofing my Under carriage
How hard was it to take the bed completely off? What did it involve?

Re: Rust proofing my Under carriage
first, i took out my bedliner, it was one of the plastic ones that kinda clip in there, then i un -bolted the gas tank filler nozzle (the 3 small bolts that are surrounding the opening) i then got underneath and disconnected the wiring, ford put some connections in there that allow you to disconnect. mine were above my spare tire guard, then i unbolted the 6 torx bed bolts, 1 of them broke on me (be prepared by spraying them with some penetrating fluid a couple hours in advance.) and that's really it. if you got some buddies it really only takes 3 people to lift, without the tailgate on of course. but yeah its a fairly simple process, just make sure nothing is still connected when you are lifting it off.
