That sure sounds like the way a salvage yard would remove it ... lol
I'd say the easiest way to remove the c-clip from the pin is with a long flat head screw driver or some special needle nose pliers.
It was a little harder for me because one of the coil packs on my 4.0 SOHC was in the way.
