Parking Brake Issues
(Not sure if this is in the right place, feel free to move).
Recently I have noticed an issue with my parking brake. When I go to park at home, I put the parking brake on, and this used to be sufficient. Now, the truck rolls back a few inches when I do this (my driveway is on a slight incline). I have been also leaving the truck in gear when I park to try to help get some extra friction. I'm just concerned that the problem will get worse, and since it's a manual, I would really like my parking brake to work properly.
I am guessing the parking brake cable is stretching out, but I wanted to come in here and see what you all thought it might be.
5 speed manual, the rest of the stats are in my sig.

Re: Parking Brake Issues
lift your rear tire off the ground, which ever one your doing at the time.
in the inside of your rear drums youll have a little rubber peice pop it out. reach a screw driver in there and youll see little gear idea. as your turning them, move your tire. youll feel it stiffen. your tightening your breaks in the rear for when put your e-brake on.
I'm sure someone else can explain that better.

Re: Parking Brake Issues
They pretty much summed it up.
But FWIW. Use a big screw driver when you move the self adjuster, and move it down towards the ground to tighten it. like put the screw driver in the top, and slide down.
What happens when you pull the cable is the rear shoes push all the way to the drum, so its just worn, you might want to check you shoes anyways. If you have the drum off just move the self-adjuster till the drum is tight.

Re: Parking Brake Issues
Do you pull in your driveway or back in. I know on my truck the parking brake is useless when rolling backwards.

Re: Parking Brake Issues
Hey guys, I'm having some trouble of my own. I have a 2003 4cyl, 2wd stick shift. When I go to engage my parking brake, instead of it clicking in and holding, it just springs right back up. I live up in Jersey, so it's a little cold to be doing too much exterior work, but maybe somebody could give me some ideas as to what the problem is. I've heard it could be a missing spring, I've also heard it could be a frozen cable. Help! I've been putting the truck in gear to hold it for the last week

Re: Parking Brake Issues
It could just be the spring hardware in the drum is old and worn. My parking brake spring actually snapped in half from rust. luckily I have an automatic so I don't use the parking brake but still. The drum hardware kit is like $8

I had an issue with my cable, the cable seized up in the sleeve that it goes through after the split near the front leaf spring hanger. Replaced it and no more trouble

considering the self adjusters adjust out when braking and backing up.....some say to get em out towards the drum quicker is to apply the parking break and apply brake or simply apply brake to have them self adjust. That's if they are lubed and functioning properly. So in theory your brakes should perform better in reverse while braking. They should be self adjusting.
I would gather from your statement either stuck adjusters. Out of adjustment. Worn shoes. Worn drums that exceed spec or cut down too much.
You might simply not having the cable travel enough. It could be rusted up and not traveling. This would cause the brake to not fully engage. Pop the wheels and drums off and observe while doing the ebrake how far your cables move the arms.
