Exclamation How to get to the Wiper motor?

Hey real quick guys.. I haven't been able to find anything about how to take off the metal panel that the top of the wiper motors is recessed in. I heard that on explorers it snaps on..

My wipers have been very lurky jurkey, since I got the truck, to the point that paint has been taken off of the passengers side edge of the panel. I was just thinking about how I needed to get that fixed today when the wipers quit altogether about an hour ago. It is like some linkage fell off or something. The motor clearly runs but the wipers themselves move freely by hand.. In order to fix the problem I need to get in and assess the mechanism for the wipers.

Bonus points for any help!

Not sure on how to get to it, but I fixed a problem that sounds almost identical to yours by just tightening down the nut on post coming out of the motor (the one that turns when the wipers are engaged). Sometimes they loosen up and just spin freely. Food for thought.

I shall check the other one tomorow but the drivers side one is tight (except for a little play in the splined pin). It acts like something totally came dissconected because the motor hums right allong as usuall and I can swivel both blades effortlessly..

the cowl, the metal piece right under the windshield, is spot welded on. you would have to pull the glass, fenders, hood, etc to get it off. there should be one or two small metal access panels on the firewall to get to the whole assembly.

Cant believe I didn't see those access panels.. I took the panels and the motor off the firewall and sure enough the bolt that tightens into the motor shaft had clean fallen off. After a little maintinence and cleaning I torqued the bolt back on and I am up and running better than before. Thanks for your posts
