Exclamation How do you Remove Headlight Assembly in 1998 Ranger

I have ordered new headlights and corner lights for my truck, however I can not get the clips to come loose for the Headlight to be removed. I can get the corner lights out no problem. Can anyone tell me an easy way to take off the clip???

If you have pictures please post as well as written instructions.

I usually use a screwdriver or bent tip needle nose pliers...tip the bottom one is easier from the bottom...

Do you use long handled bent tip pliers? I have tried a screwdriver and short bent tip pliers. I am thinking long ones will work better.

I don't have a picture but I take the pliers and put the tips in the holes and pull them apart instead of squeezing them while pulling the clip. The clips also have locking tabs on them.

BigNob, not sure if you got your headlamps out or not, but I just replaced mine on my '98 and it was a pain. However, for $40 on eBay, some sweating and cursing , I have two crystal clear headlights now (I tried one of the haze removal kits, but it did not work very well).

The only way I found to take out those two clips was to get a small screwdriver or bent pick between the plastic thing with the grooves in it and the metal finger of the clip and simultaneously pull the tang out of the groove and lift it up so as to start to move the main clip out of its groove. Once I was able to do this with on side of the clip, I was able to work the other side out and up and free the clip. Installing them was about as bad - had work the tangs of the clip into the proper grooves (there are three open grooves between the tangs).

Another issue that is not discussed is getting that bottom outside post out - I had to get in there as best I could with some long needlenose pliers and squeeze together the two plastic thingys that lock the post into the body. Putting in the new one was no piece of cake because those two thingys on the post that are supposed to snap out once it gets in far enough did not want to do so. Some silicone spray helped, although one catch is still not out all the way (good enough, though).

It is especially painful working on these 98-00 headlights when you see how simple Ford made it on the 2001s and up.

Thanks everyone I got them replaced and they look great. Btw getting a long flathead screwdriver and just bending them out works the best.
