ok so what i did so far was take off my skid plate in the front, and two front wheels. got to everything as best as i could in the wheel wells and front engine area. have not done the cab yet. but that is my plan, to get everything as best as i can. then rubberized undercoating.

Ford won't bother painting the frames or doing any undercoating protection, they want the frames to rust. The sooner they rust, the sooner you can buy another, kind of an ill-logical way of thinking. Or is it??

When your average buyer comes in to look at a vehicle (in this case a Ranger), they are going to focus on the body, interior, accessories, and motor. The frame will look all so pretty and new.
Then you buy it, and a few years later, you have another accessory, RUST!!

For Ford, painting and doing such under body frame protection, would probably increase the sticker price by at least $2000.

Here's what I think: Ford doesn't want you to keep your "new" vehicle more than 10 years. They want you to sell it or trade it in for a brand new "newer" model every 5-8 years. (Now this kind of sucks if they are discontinuing the Ranger) Or they want you to LEASE a vehicle. (Pay them to let you borrow a car for a few years and then return it and have nothing, and you can't customize a leased vehicle?)

I have a 99 Ranger, bought it in 2005, so it was 6 years old. It is now about 13. It has some rust, more than I like. I plan on doing this undercoating next summer, wish I would have done it sooner. But sadly since I have had the truck, I already put in a new motor, and rebuilt the tranny. I guess I might as well make sure the frame will last as long as the new tranny and motor?

Where can one get this POR15 stuff???

Thanks

^amen, i had picked my quart of por15 up from a local distribution shop, but im sure you can get it at some local automotive supply stores. i would bite the bullet and buy the extra prepping supplies that they recommend to use it with.

but if you are planning on doing this, good luck and hopefully you don't find any holes (like me)

Luckily my local area does not use salt and use dirt but I still drive the truck to other towns that heavily use salt. I was happy to see that the previous owner used some rubberized undercoating so the frame is not that bad but there is definitely rust in parts that he got lazy. I just hope my quick spray will do the job for this winter and then next summer I will see if I can remove the bed and pickup some POR15 and do it up right.

see if we all atleast layed under our trucks with some rubberized undercoating when we got them new, this all could be solved. i had a hole right in between my leaf spring hanger in between the 4 bolts. so i took a 1/8th inch piece of steel, made a template for the new leaf spring hanger drilled 4 holes, then fish plated it onto the frame along with the hanger. wish i snapped some photos.

Sorry for bumping a oldish thread, but by what i have heard on other forums for getting the flaky rust off is to use a needle scaler. Much quicker.

the needle scaler also works well to get rid of the old undercoating

Needle scalers are for building bridges and might be over kill for underbody be gentle or you'll definitely end up with holes.
