Man...this is definitely a bigger project then I expected. My plan tomorrow is to just scrape off as much of the exterior rust that I can with a wire brush and then go at it with the rubberized undercoating spray. I bought three cans worth since I probably won't be able to reach some areas. I just want to do something to keep it from getting worse.

Great work For all the people out there with new trucks start now. These trucks will last forever if you can beat the rust

I went at the rust with a wire brush this morning...got as much as I could do but surprisingly the previous owner had sprayed some rubberized undercoating so that definitely helped with the rust. I also noticed that the previous owner had replaced the U-Joint which is awesome but I did notice that the leaf springs are sagging and one of them is broken...soooooo it looks like I will be replacing them either this winter or wait until Spring. Anyone think that I should replace sooner or can I just deal until Spring?

You might as well just take the complete bed off in spring

It depends how bad your undercarriage is....I wouldn't spray anything unless the temperature is near 70-85degrees. But you should be find if you just keep the road salt off the truck during the winter months.

Too late...sprayed as much of the under carriage as I could get to. Hopefully it dried up enough.

curious, what did you use for paint? i was told that rubberized undercoat is best with a coat of rusty metal rustoleum primer underneath. as for your leaf springs, i would grab a set off of a junker explorer, they bolt right up and also add 2" of lift, then you can crank your t-bars!

Since I knew that this would be a semi hack job first time DIY, I purchased the Dupli-Color Rubberized Undercoat spray cans that costs $5 each at Advance Auto Parts. I probably will use Rustoleum Professional Grade cans next summer.

So Explorer and Ranger leaf springs work...good to know. But wouldn't my front end be lower then...drag style? hahahaha.

I just bought some chassis saver bout week ago just need to find time to do it. prob gonna strap the bed to my lift and raise it off the frame, use the angle grinder with some roloc disc on the frame and start brushing it on. doesnt look like a very fun job tho. but it looks like it is well worth it when all is said and done

This was the first mod I did to my Ranger as soon as I could. Killed all the rust, then painter everything with rustolieum black for the frame and differential and silver for the diff cover, driveshaft and outer brake drums.
being a second owner and the truck only having 13K on the OD, my truck must of did a lot of parking lot ops and wasn't garage kept....there was a lot of surface rust!
You'd think Ford would paint all the bare metal under there!

if you crank your torsion bars, its not as bad. maybe an inch higher in the rear after cranking.

this is what mine looks like after a 1.75" gain from stock add a leaf and cranked (not maxed torsions) plan on getting some 31's in the future. with my bedcap it does sag and even out.

i've seen 2011 rangers with no paint on the axle! im like theres no way that will last more then 5 years here in new england! if everyone just applied motor oil (atleast) to their frames every year, they'd last that much longer
