thinking bout repainting

i was thinking bout re painting my truck. but doing it my self...can someone tell me the prosses of doing it my self? im not fixing the body or anything. just straight re painting it. instructions and tips plz. thanks

First off do you have any dents in the body if so I would advise against just painting it and not doing body work

nothing magor..there are a few scratches. i think the wost one is a dent above the rear brake light...it may be next to it. couldnt i just body puddy it? its not big. but there is no way to got it out were it is.

here is what I know about painting-
1.Prep
-Sand out imperfections and pound out/ fill if need be
-clean with a wax and grease remover (don't use duplicolor)
2. Prime
-I haven't had much experiance with this, but it seems simple. Just shoot the paint
-Wet sand with 400-600 grit sandpaper
3. Base coat
-Shoot light coats, you should be able to see the primer after the first coat and just barely after the second
-4 coats is what I ussualy do
-let paint dry to a dull luster between coats
-before appling coats 2,3 and 4 blast with air and lightly wipe with a tack rag
4. Clear coat
-This is the most important part, any mistakes here will show
-Start with light coats and end with a medium coat
-2-3 coats is what I ussualy do
5. Buff and polsih
-AFter either a force dry or 24 hours you can wet sand out imperfections with 1500-2000 grit sandpaper.
-Apply a polishing compound after using sand paper

6. Wash after about a week and wax after 30 days

I mean blow some air on it with your gun to blow off the dust and use a tack rag and very lightly brush it off.

Tack rags can be bought at o'reily for 99 cents. They are a rag with a bit of wax to pick up the dust instead of brushing dust across and scratching your paint.

and what i the point of this? and question..if i do this in like a big metal shed. nothing fancy. got a gravel floor.. but wat bout overspray and all? would that get everywerre? or would it be ok to paint outside and put it in there at night and stuff to dry.

In a gravel shed, you have to worry about the dust you will stir up walking around. Wet the floor and the overspray won't stick. This will also keep you from stirring up as much dust.
I don't know the size of your shed, but if the walls are far enough away, you will have no problem.

The point of the tack cloth is to get all the dust that may have settled onto your paint while it was drying.

Well, your able too. The best case senario for a do-it-yourselfer would be a 2 car garage and alot of cheapo tarps to form a paintbooth. I however have painted parts like my radio bezel and bumpers on the driveway. Just make sure there isn't alot of dust blowing in the air.
Also keep in mind that the paint should be used at 55+ degrees F.
Have you checked price on a repaint too? It can be very expsensive because you will need a big compressor, gun, and lots of paint, primer and clear. Plus lots of sandpaper.

i looked into some duplicolor paint and its like 50 a can i think..my buddy has a gun. i have a compreser.

Really? What paint is this? I wasn't aware that duplicolor sold paint in cans other than there sparkle and mirage stuff.

Are you talking the paint shop stuff? I have used some it to try it out. It is a laquer, which is outdated. Nowadays everyone uses urethane. I shoot urethane bc/cc. You should really do some googleing and reading before you just jump into this.
