Cool Roof Rack Installed!

I know most people either love or hate roof racks on our trucks. I for one love them and it will actually serve its purpose on my truck. Throw my road bike up top and keep my gear in bed. Adding a bed cover next.

This is the Thule rack. 400XT feet, 50in load bars, and 56 fit kit. Kinda wondering if my doors are going to leak, wasnt real confident on how Thule does the mounts on our truck (they go over the door seal). The storm heading my way now should tell me one way or another!

Picked the bars and feet up from craigslist for dirt cheap and the new fit kit for half price on ebay. Overall i got 60$ into this whole setup. Pretty damn good deal, IMO.

I'm neutral on how they look but if they do the job you need them to do, I can't knock them.

My suspicions were confirmed. Just opened my door to find all 4 have leaked. Don't know WTF I'm gonna do to take care of it. Just going to take them back off for now.

What about getting a hitch rack for your bike instead?

This was actually my first thought as well. Did you guys use anything in particular? Or just some weather strip I can pick up from a hardware store?

I have a 99 XLT and a buddy is about to give me a VERY nice basket for free but I need the mounts and rack first. I definitely want to go for a no drill option first and one that mounts as low as possible.

Anybody know of a system like that which might be a bit more inexpensive than the Thule? Been searching CL but down here finding good truck parts is difficult in SoFla...

Thanx, your truck looks great! Did you figure out the leak?

The Yakima or Thule racks are both in the 100s new. Those are going to be are your best options for no drill racks. Keep an eye out on craigslist in your area, I always see both brands of towers and bars going for cheap. Then pick up your trucks fit kit on eBay.

The issue with my truck was the fit kit I bought was "new old stock" it was made before Thule revised the kit for the rangers. Same part number as the new kit that does fit out trucks though. I am reselling the rack to a guy tonight actually and I'm picking up a Yakima. After playing with both racks in person, I personally found I like the Yakima better.

----------

If it helps you any here is what our trucks need:

THULE-
50in Load Bars
400XT Towers
FitKit 56

YAKIMA-
48in Load Bars
Q Towers
Q25 Clips

Hey buddy, I had the same problem, I fixed mine by actually making a slut in the first seal sliding it through and then using some black gasket maker to seal them in.

Looks like you did a good job with your fix man!
My concern is these companies really didnt make these mounts and sell them knowing they leak do they? I mean, these things should be made not to freaking leak, why the hell would someone want to pay hundreds of dollars for some shit that malfunctions? Just frustrated with Thule about it. I've heard much more good remarks about Yakima which is why I am going their route next, but after your post it seems like I need to watch out for the same with them. If it comes to that I'll probably end up doing a permeant roof mount foot. We shall see!

This project is on hold for now though, I burned my fun money on a "too good to pass" deal big screen TV that a friend was selling before moving out of state. But the Thule did get sold on craigslist already.
