Default Can I clean this fog light? Look at the pic and let me know!

Hey all--so I've finally gotten my new bumper, it's painted, and will be installed early next week!! Please take a look at the attached photos: as you can see, the rust from the bumper has permeated the drivers side fog (see passenger side fog for comparison). The rust has seeped INSIDE the clear plastic cover.

TWO QUESTIONS:
1.) can I easily get the fog light assembly off the valance without removing the entire valance/bumper?
2.) after it's off, can I somehow get inside the fog assembly to attempt to clean out the rust?

I'm having a pro install the new bumper, so I was hoping to remove the fog beforehand, and try and have it cleaned up in advance of the new bumper.

Thanks for looking... appreciate any thoughts!

Chris

Doesnt look like you can. Not to expierienced with those valence lights. Never have been. Take a look at the light from the reverse(stick your head in the wheel well and see whats going on in there)

No kidding. The bumper is actually really simple to install especially if you have a 6 pack and another hand to help you.

And yeah, you probably CAN clean that light out. I think you would basically have to follow the directions on the headlight mod (don't have a link to it, sorry) and just bake the light in the oven for a few minutes to have the lense come off, clean it, and then re-install.

^ the light obviously is rusted on the inside.. you can't just "clean" rust away.
looks to me like a new light is going to be needed.

Thanks for the responses... the bumper is being installed for $80, which is fine for me. My dad has been going to the same shop for years, so no worries there. I looked underneath and I'd rather pay to have it done quickly than have to get another person and spend several hours on it. Anyway, I guess I'll be looking for a new drivers side fog light... thanks again.

I won't be able to get a new fog assembly before tomorrow's bumper installation. Since the affected lamp still works fine, I'll just have the guy reinstall the valance/fogs "as is".

I'll hopefully have a replacement light in a week or so... back to my original question... does anyone know if I'll be able to remove and replace the affected fog assembly without disassembling the entire valance/bumper?

It should be on it's own separate bracket. Whether or not the bracket is attached to something that requires the valance to be removed, I'm not sure. You can always crawl underneath it and look.

I know that this is an older post, but not sure if there ever was a solution to it. I have the exact problem on my 2000, with the same fog light, and looks like a picture from my truck. There is a piece of metal inside the light behind the lens that is just laying there loose and rusting turning the lens orange. The bracket appears to be held on with only one screw with a u nut, but the screw broke trying to get it out, except the bracket and fog light is still held tight and wont budge. The lens looks like it it held on with 2 tabs at the sides and would come off if there was room or the light and bracket would come out. Does anybody know what else there could be holding the fog bracket in ?

I found the problem, there are 2 more screws on the bottom of the fog bracket that you can only get to, and see, with the vallance off. I found the information in the LMC catalog with the pictures of my foglights and bracket. Now to take the valance off with all those rusted screws and u nuts.

I'm in a similar situation, except I drove through water and caused my bulbs to explode inside the fog light housings.
I need to get the housings off so i can dump out the remains of the old bulbs.

Anyone have a link to a diagram showing the bracket and which fasteners I need to remove to accomplish this?

If this helps, the mounting bracket is L shaped with one screw in a u nut centered and you get to this from the wheel well just above the fog light, the other two mounting screws are on the bottom of the bracket just above the vallance where it meets the bumper, the only way to get to these two is with the vallence off. If your only problem is the broken glass from the old bulbs inside, pull the bulb holders out and try using a shop vac at the bulb hole.

p.s. if you have a LMC catalog, the exact fog lights and brackets are shown.
