Default Stripped rear differential bolt

My truck is due for gear oil change and unfourtanely the rear diff bolt (The one where you put the square 3/8 drive in) is pretty much rounded in the middle now, and I cannot get it out.

I tried heating the bolt and using a chisel and hammer on the side of it to try and make it budge but had no luck. Tried many things, this sucks.
Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't wanna drill it out for risk of metal chips getting in the gear box.

Take a hammer along with a extension. Hit it in the middle then try hammering a 3/8 drive adapter in there and break it loose.

get a good drill bit and drill through it. after the oil drains out use an ease out and very easily try to get it out. if that doesn't work just drill the rest of the plug out tap some new threads and put in a new plug.

You could go ahead and pull the cover off. Drain everything out. Get a rag with a bunch of Vaseline on it. Stick it up where the plug is. Drill it and use a easy out.

I would pull the cover, drill a about a 1/2" hole up top. Buy one of those rubber plugs they sell in the HELP* section of autozone. Fill thru the cover then stick the plug in.

I"m ghetto::

had the same problem, so I welded a screwdriver to it and turned. Came right out. Funny how leverage works.

If you're UBER lazy (like me) just go to the junkyard and pull a cover with a good one in it lol

Usually they get stripped because people change the diff fluid just fine, and a week later notice moisture coming from the fill cap, and instinctively tighten it. Not realizing that it's like an oil-pan drain plug, it doesn't take much.

I've seen probably a dozen of 'em stripped so bad you coldn't get ANYTHING to bind enough to twist 'em.

The guys at Sears are getting pretty pissed though, I've exchanged a LOT of screwdrivers with no tips for some reason lol

Got the sucker out, took my grinder/cutter.. made two slits on the round end side of bolt I put the slits where I would have the most leverage..., jacked up the truck so I had more room, then I torched the bolt.. hammerd two huge screw drivers in the slits and used so much leverage it finally budged.
