Default Tailgate cable screw stuck

We bought our first Ranger about a month and a half ago and are tackling the to-do list of fixes. What should be the simplest item on the list is just not working.
The torx screws that hold the tailgate cables onto the tailgate would unscrew a certain distance and then just spin, going nowhere. We did manage to get them out by prying and unscrewing simultaneously but then ran into the problem of not being able to get them back in. One side won't catch at all while the other went in part way and now just spins.

I know these cables get replaced all the time, so it cannot be this hard. What are we doing wrong?

Here's the screw. We have tried several replacements but have found nothing to match the threads in the tailgate:

This is the one that went partially in but is now spinning:

Thanks for any help you can give.

Thats very common, and it isnt broken. There is a catch bar in there for the screw to tighten to. Use a flashlight and a thin screw driver to move it over, put the bolt in and tap it in with a hammer. If that doesn't work, remove the panel on the inside of the tail gate so you can hold that piece steady while you tap the bolt in

We had the panel off anyway to change out the handle, and a little extra tapping did the trick. Thank you for your help.

Does anyone know a part number or vendor for those tailgate bolts? Advanceauto and Autozone did not have anything similar. I was in the process of removing the driver side bolt on the tailgate when the torx screw stripped . I tried an eazyout and the tip broke inside the bolt . So, I had to finish the job with a 6" pipe wrench.
Long story short, the internet is telling me I have the only remaining tailgate bolt for this truck in existence. Any help or info would be appreciated....

I will be crawling under her this afternoon to attempt replacing her rear shocks. I'm hoping for a smoother experience.

I may have some in the garage. If not hit the junkyard for some or just go to a dealer, they are all the same size and should be cheap at the dealer. I will shoot you a pm if I find them

Thanks for the help.

I just crawled out from under the truck. I just figured I would try taking care of those rear shocks while I still had some daylight but had no luck again. I got a set of metric deep sockets so I can take care of the shocks myself. It turns out my 19mm socket may be slightly too big for those shocks. Back to the drawing board and more research on what size the nut is for the shocks. I tried with the 19mm but it rounded the edges of the nut just a bit. I figured I would stop now, while I still have a decent shape on that nut.

Here's a quick video that shows you how to get that stuck bolt out in the tailgate.
