I had a bed mat in my old '94 ranger. It was a really heavy one, never had any problems with it scrunching up or with water damaging the bed by sitting underneath. It was also a handy place to keep a metal hanger in case I locked my keys inside. But I were to choose for my current ranger I would problem do a spray/roll in bed liner.

I have a rubber bed mat in my truck but I also have a roll up tonneau cover. The bed mat is around 3/8" thick and smells like a new tire every time I open the tailgate.

I haven't hauled anything other than my bicycle, groceries, fishing gear and other small stuff. Nothing large yet.

My mat only cost me $60.00 locally. I love my mat and cover combination.

I voted for a bed mat as you can do a spray in liner later when funds become avaliable.

I have a bed mat in mine. It came with the truck when I bought it so I can't help you with price, but it;'s pretty thick and does help. Drop in liners are shit. I like my mat.

I like the rubber 1/2" mat in mine: I can drop a motor in the bed and NOT strap it and it'll have enough static friction to stay in place driving the 3mi home slow.

I can pull it out to get to the bed bolts easy and have 0 problems modifying my bed for fuel cell/spare tire/ etc compared to having a sprayed/rolled in liner.

I do like spray in liners but not for what I do. If you haul lumber/building supplies all day every day then a spray in is GREAT. But it only offers about 1/3 the friction for gripping my stuff that a rubber mat does.

Counter to what some people think, it does NOT hold water trapped between the mat and the bed. It leaks through the holes in the bed just fine lol.

Only real downside is it smells like burnt gear oil until I wash it out again from welding a diff in the bed lol

Why not get a bed mat that covers the whole bed? The company is called BedRug. It's a soft bed liner that keeps the bed nice, the whole bed.

I actually looked up their website and it can run up to the higher $$400 which is not really in my budget, but it is a good alternative.

I don't really like drop-ins but I like bed mats so I'd go that route.... it really depends on what you use the bed for 'cause if the sides need to be protected then skip the mat and get the liner.
