loosen all the screws and bolts holding the handle and the latches...this will allow you to pull one of the latches out far enough to unhook it from the rod that goes between the handle and the latch. Then you can pull the rest of the assembly, including the handle and the other latch, out through the latch hole on the opposite side of the gate.
easier to do all this with the tailgate up on a bench, or across sawhorses.
We found the "weld nuts" inside the tailgate had broken loose. This had caused both latches to be quite wiggly and unstable so that the tailgate would not close properly. We cut 2 inspection holes into the inside of the gate right near the latches, and installed 3/8" bolts and nuts, instead of using the stock bolts. Worked great, and the inspection holes were covered by the bedliner .
