Default HID's

Im getting new headlights and i came across a set of hid's that are the style i want and are only 50 bucks more than the ones i was looking at. Are HID's all single low beam? Are they really that much better? And they come with the harness to so its pretty much plug and play.

its all plug n play but they do come with high/low kits so you will have high beams but the way id go if you could afford it is do a projector retrofit heres a kit for around 270 but it comes with a really good hid kit plus the projectors shrouds and all you need plus it would look amazing and would have great light put out without all the glare

those are just halogen housings with a plug and play hid kit. the housing was not designed to run an HID light, therefore will scatter light and piss off other drivers. putting HIDs into a non-hid housing is illegal in california, as well as the rest of the country. retrofits of projectors yields the best results for light output and focus, but again is also illegal. the law states that you can not put hids into any housing that did not come equipped from the factory with them.

however if this truck is for off road use only, they're amazing. more light at night is never a bad thing. you can buy new housings without an HID kit and buy a DDM tuning kit to suit your needs, and DDM has a great warranty on their products.

Wrong, wrong, and wrong. There is no such law in California. And there is no such "nationwide law". And there is no method to enact or enforce any such law of any sort on a nationwide basis. That is completely false and whoever told you that has no idea what they're talking about.

How the law effects HID's is a state by state issue and it is different in each state. Per california state law, you can do whatever you want to your headlights as long as they are in the appropriate positions and they are white. That's it. Anyone who says otherwise is full of shit.

And furthermore, HID's can be used in our halogen light housings just fine. You just need to aim them properly. The HID lamp is a light source in the exact same position as the halogen lamp would have been in. Just as much light will be scattered and as they do with halogens. Improperly aimed headlights will cause this to blind oncoming traffic, whether you use HID's or halogens. Aim the lights properly, or maybe a little further down, and you are fine.

I looked at several and they all stated legal in all states. I don't see why they wouldn't be.

You are awesome haha. Especially when it comes to cai. I would align them properly for sure. The lights in these say they are aqua blue but I know I've seen several full size rigs that run blue aftermarket headlights in nearby towns. I guess ill have to look up the law in the CA handbook. I don't see why it would be a problem if they were adjusted properly.

Ignore anything and everything you read on there about this. An internet forum is not the state law. And nobody there seems to know what they're talking about either. Anyone who starts talking about DOT approved markings is full of shit.

I cite the real law in the State of California..
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24252.htm (General lighting requirements)
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24400.htm (Location of headlights)
http://dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc25950.htm (Color of lights)

They're lying. They are not legal in all 50 states. California, yes. Lots of other states, yes. But there are states where it is illegal to use anything but standard SAE spec equipment.

Which politely implies I have little to no life, or lots of spare time at work, or both, to read up on other state laws for other people on the internet.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc24005.htm this counters the color of the lights, since it is very rare for any hid kit to be actually white, or amber. they do sell "white" and "amber," which are legal under lighting colors.

DDM kits, as well as a vast majority of Ebay lighting equipment, do not have the certification of passing the federal standards.

The original claim was that HID kits are illegal. It's erroneous to justify that claim on the idea that some users buy bulbs that output colors which are not legal.

Illegally colored bulbs = illegal.
Legally colored bulbs = legal.

There is no certification issued. The whole "D.O.T. certified" stamps and whatnot are put there by the manufacturer to let the consumer know the product meets D.O.T. standards. There is no application, or review process involved (granted, they will probably open themselves up to crazy fines if they put it on a product which does not meet the standards).

Regardless, the claim that selling HID kits may be illegal still does not mean that using HID kits is illegal.

No it isn't rare for them to be white. That's a complete lie. Anything from 4500-6000 is pure white light. 8000k is white with a tinge of blue very much like the ones you see on beamers and the like. If you want to use your obsurred claim, then the OEM halogen lights are also not white and therefore must be illegal. This claim is of yours is false. Sorry.

Also, another load of BS. There is no such thing as DOT or SAE certification. Neither DOT or SAE certify or test anything. Nor is any such marking statutory or meaningful. And furthermore, the wording of the quoted section has nothing at all to do with what you do to your vehicle. It says "no dealer shall sell or offer for sale a vehicle to which the standard is applicable, and no person shall sell or offer for sale for use upon a vehicle..." That section, along with all applicable federal laws, apply only to the sale of equipment by dealers and resellers. You as an end-user are not bound by that section, nor are you bound by the federal FMVSS standards.

Sorry. You will not win this debate no matter how hard you try.
