thats what i was tryin to say that you shouldnt be able to hold it. it could be that the c-clips that hold the axle shaft in are gone cuz someone already messed with is so the axle shafts are not in correctly which could cause them not to spin. it could be that the pinion gear is screwed up (possible noise) and it isnt contacting the ring gear. it could also be that the axle splines have been screwed up as well. the only way that i can think of to really find out is take off the inspection cover and look dont take out the carrier assembly cuz then your goin to mess up the backlash and then you'll be all screwed up.

sorry if i forgot to put bolts in it didnt come w. instructions i tryed my best atleast ..i believe the stipped splines is the answer i could just swap my axles from removed unit but right side is at least a bent flange and the tube was out of it proper placement in the diff housing...edit the splines in spool is just as bad too need a whole new diff or traction unit again Thanks for the post looking out at least when i go to boneyard 2morrow to replace bad unit i know what to look for isnt that cool i wont be stuck wondering to take it home and waste another day.. take care

DD 1993 FoMoCo Ranger,,swb,,inline 4cylinder,, 7.5 diff w. 9 " drum all bone stock original w. over 140,000 mileages the only hop up part is the rear wheel are of early drag era slotted style 15*8.5 these babies are so light you can lift them with your pinkie eat your hearts out.. they are mfg i believe by McCreary but i might B wrong can any 1 recognise them if i post a pic???

I didn't get that he said he stopped both axles. My bad lol But this does make sense here
