Default Painting the grille instead of buying new?

I would like to have a black grille and I've seen some people who paint them. Do I really have to buy a whole new grille or will the paint work ok? Are there any drawbacks to painting the grille (besides not being able to change it back if I don't like it)?

Well dang! Yeah, it's chrome. Well that stinks! Thanks though. That will save me the headache of painting it and finding out afterwards that it won't work!

The paint I actually bought says it will supposedly cover chrome with little to no sanding, but wasn't sure about actually doing it.

Real chrome?

The sell a "black chrome" tint that makes the chrome a black chrome color.

If youre serious about it, paint isnt the way for this.

I wouldnt trust that paint, chrome is RIDICULOUSLY hard to paint.

I would paint the chrome with niteshades tail light tint. I painted my chrome Mazda logo with it and it looks great. Definitely looks like "black chrome"

Do it up, a niteshaded chrome grill would look hot.

Possibly, if the chrome is peeling now I wouldn't recommend it. If its not, give it a try. If it starts to peel, then worry about getting a new grill.

Well I did it and it works out great... I painted the grill and the bumper and the rear bumper myself and no one notices... dont worry just do it yourself and who ever says something is a finatic, But no one else knows.. But you will have to redue it in about 4 months but once thats done it will be done.....

I've had some success painting chrome, but it requires a lot of sanding to get the chrome where it will hold onto the paint.
I tried painting the chrome top section of my grille & it looked ok, but it chipped with road debris... my solution was to peel off all the chrome, sand the plastic under it & see what happened.
So far the paint has held up really well (Krylon Fusion) although there's still a crack in the center of my grille.
