Default Harbor Freight Class 3 hitch insall!

So Harbor Freight had a step bumper Class 3 receiver hitch on sale for $15, so I picked one up for my cargo carrier for camping so i can sleep in the bed of my truck. I was worried on how I was going to mount it, so I just jumped in and measured it and drilled a couple of holes then realizing that I forgot to get the bolts i need and it was 7:30pm on a Sunday night i went to the only hardware store in town open at this time "Home De-pot" and got what I thought I needed but when I got home I found out the bolts weren't long enough so i had to got back and got the right ones bolted everything up and it looks great. the only things i have left to do it get a block to fill the space between the bumper and the top of the hitch ( the lips on the front and back keep it from being flush and even) and some grade 8 carriage bolts to finish it up!! Now for it to get warm and stay warm so I can go camping!!.

EDIT: install Time with trips to Home De-pot about an hour.

Good job on the mounting but you shoulda pulled the plastic and drilled.. put the bolts in and then put the plastic back over the top.. it wouldve been a cleaner look but good job overall..

Your pics may be confusing me. The hitch isn't mounted to the bumper is it? I hope its on the frame.

Gotcha, never heard of a bumper mounted hitch like that. OP, if you already had the bumper ball, what is the point of adding this bumper hitch?

X2 on putting the bolts under the plastic step, or maybe drilling some larger holes in the plastic to let the bolts hit metal... they might work loose when the plastic wears out over time.
Hard to tell the size of the bolts, but I'd go with 4x 1/2" to 5/8" grade 5 or 8 bolts to be on the safe side.

I've seen those bumper mounted hitches & I wanted one to mod for my front hitch.
If I can grab one for $15 I might have to give it a try.

So this might not work after all, I got some grade 5 bolts today, after the guy at fastnal said that grade 8 would be a bad idea in case i back in to something or hit a big rock. anyway i put my cargo carrier on the receiver with about 25LBs of stuff in the lock box and found that the step bounces quite abit when i hit a bump, so i am looking in to some way to make it more stable with out spending more that about 20 buck. i am trying to do this for less than half of a real class 3 receiver.

You aren't going to find it to my knowledge. It also doesn't classify as a class 3 hitch, at least what you have, you have a class 1. Any bumper mounted hitch is going to bounce.

Oh, and just buy the grade 8. There is no reason, to skimp and go for 5's.

Grade 8 will snap before grade 5 will Thats why hes staying with grade five just in case someone rearends him or he backs into something they will just bend instead of snap and lose his hitch.

You are somewhat correct, a grade 8 will sheer at a higher strength but is less ductile, a grade 5 is more ductile, meaning flexible but will sheer sooner. What I am saying is if they hit you and it is enough to cause damage, it isn't going to matter what the hell grade you use. But for my truck I would choose the grade 8 which is the stronger fastener.

^ ^ Yeah, if somebody rams into me I know I'm gonna get damage... but I would want to do as much damage to their vehicle as possible in the process.
I'm starting to keep my trailer hook or receiver ball in my hitch now. I've thought about making a nice big SPIKE to put in the hitch... I bet nobody would tailgate too close to me then.

He might be able to add a little more strength if he were to add a 3" wide 1/4" thick chunk of steel between the bumper & hitch.
