Default camper shell roof rack

im looking to put a roof rack on my campershell ( pic in avatar) im curious for opinions about thule and yakima? what parts will i have to carisglaist or ebay, parting together a new one would be far out of my price range. my shell doesnt have any rack rails. im looking at carrying skis, snowboards, kayaks, and a rocketbox.

I've got Yakima on mine, I think yakima accessories are better than thule as far as functionality, quality of parts, less little parts, etc. Bars are bars, they're all basically the same. Thule end caps have a tendency to fall out more easily than Yakima ones. As far as what you'll need to look for on craigslist, the supports are the Yakima 1A gutter mounts (x4), you'll need 66" cross bars (x2), those are both easily craigslistable...

unfortunately, the part that's almost impossible to find on craigslist (unless you find them attached to a shell that's for sale and they're willing to part them out) are the artificial rain gutters or "Yakima Side Loader". These come in pairs, and you'll need 2.

Most CL racks are missing keys, but those are pretty easily replaceable. Look out for rust on the bars.

I managed to score mine for $50 plus $70 for the "Side Loaders", and I even scored keys with mine!

Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions...

I'll try an get some better pictures of the rack for you tomorrow.

redneck, thats freaking snazzy! how much weight can your shell support, im thinking the roof can hold less that the side walls, but i really have no idea

so hopefully i win my ebay auction today. and ill have the Yakima 1A gutter mounts (x4), and 66" cross bars (x2), in the mail for $60. and the the side loaders (x4) for $70.

im pretty sure none of it will come with directions. so what is a good recommended spacing between the rails? im hoping to use the rack for: skis, snowboards, whitewater kayaks, flat water kayaks and a rocket box. but not all at the same time (just yet). any one have pictures from when they mounted their racks.

sorry about any typos, my work keyboard has seen many run-ins with toppled coffee cups

I've been so busy I haven't had a chance to take pics, but tomorrow I will and i'll get my measurements.

I'm not sure about the max weight, but the sides are stronger than the top for sure (except for some ARE ones which have a honeycomb core). Certain areas of the sides are more reinforced than others (near windows, corners, etc).

One thing to consider is height of the racks. I'm just having racks on the shell so it doesn't really matter, but if you plan to later put a rack on the cab, you should make sure they're the same height as the that.

Also, I thiiiink it's possible to have 58" bars on there, but I have 66" since sometimes I have a boat on the top and like the extra width for the accessories. I can put a rocketbox and skis or kayak on at the same time, or 2 bikes and a rocket box. I love all the yakima accessories, plus it just looks cool with a little overhang, imho.

I'm so sorry I haven't had the time to take pictures, I will get them to you asap. Measurement between bars really depends on what you want to use it for. For skis, you obviously can't have them too far apart as you want at least 10" sticking out on each end...so I guess if you're hauling short skis keep it close. I'm tall, so my skis are 181s and fit with no problem, my girlfriend rides 167s and they fit in there ok. If I'm taking someone's gear that's shorter, I just put it in the bed.

For boats/canoes/kayaks, you obviously want them farther apart, so I'd recommend finding some median between your skis and your boats.

Also, if you have a rocketbox, some have adjustable mounts, other's are a fixed distance, so depending on that, you might be limited. I'll measure mine tomorrow...PROMISE! haha

Regarding height off the top of the cap, it varies. It looks like your windows go up pretty high, so that will probably be your limiting factor. IMO racks look better lower and with a smaller gap between the roof and rack, but that's not always an option. Also, it makes it easier to tie things on if they're a little higher, or like in my case, I put sailboats up there and sometimes they have deck hardware that hangs down, so being a little higher is ok. Not sure if your boats/kayaks/canoes have rocker to them from bow to stern, but you should think about that. Like I said, in your case, the window will probably be your limiting factor.

The side loaders are easy to mount, just make sure if you have carpet on the inside of the shell that you be careful when you drill through so that the carpet doesn't get tangled with the drill bit... Also, if you're mounting them with the shell on your truck, you might need a second person to do the front ones unless your side windows lift out.

Finding the right position and mounting them square is harder than actually mounting them. Measure multiple times before you drill, make some chalk lines to make sure they're even, etc etc. If anything, position the front ones slightly lower than the rear ones so make whatever you're carrying a bit more aerodynamic. It's more difficult to get the bars horizontally level...make sure you're parked on level ground. The nice thing about Yakima round bars is that the rack surface is the same regardless of if the sideloader mounts aren't quite square.

Hope that helps...

thanks much for the info....... it be raining like the dickens here, so project is postponed till the towers get here and we have some dry time. im also planning on silicon and rubber washers when i mount the sideloaders, to keep things water tight. i just got the rails in the mail today and i totally lucked out. i ordered them from ebay, and it looks like i was only charged for one set, but received 2 sets :
my telemark skis are: 170cm and 168cm
my snowboard is a 168cm
my kayaks are: dagger axiom 8.0 and a dagger outlaw

i got me some measuring to do

Haha, yes you do! That's pretty sweet you got one set free! I definitely recommend silicon. The side loaders come with a rubber plate shaped like the rectangular metal fitting.

I measured the height off the cab and mine are about 2.5 inches to the bottom of the rack. I wouldn't go much higher than that unless your windows won't let go go that low.
