You should have done this first...
Remove the top shock mounting nut on the problem side.
Using the frame, jack up the front end so the problem side tire hangs freely. It will take all the pressure off of the bolt. Remove bolt. Replace.
When I adjusted my front end, I jacked it up, turned the bolts and then set it down, checking the height sitting on the garage floor. I wanted it higher, so I jacked it up again, etc.
My shocks did not come out of the mounting holes, yours might - keep an eye on them while doing the lowering.
