Default Hood/engine Light

One of the things I wanted on my truck was a hood light to light up the engine bay.

First I bought a hood light from a really old ranger at the junk yard but it was completely rotted and unusable. So I bought some flex LED lights

Install was very simple just removed the shield under the hood and zip tied the lights to the shield running the wiring behind and coming out at the hood strut with a tilt switch to turn on when the hood is raised.

Everything is wired in pretty cleanly and I like how the install looks and wow is there ever a lot of light. Makes me happy that the first light was rotted and I went this way. No more darkness for anything under the hood from adding windshield washer to doing matience or a mood

They are automotive use LED's for interior and exterior use so I'm hoping that the heat and vibration resistance is enough for this use but time will tell.

I don't expect any heat related problems now but this summer stuck in traffic on a smoking hot sunny day in the black truck will be the ultimate test.

Removed the material/cloth like guard and then pushed a small punch threw on either side of the LED and put a zip tie through it holding the light in place tight to the guard.

Crappy pic looks much better than this but shows mount... it's the guard that bends a bit up and down the lights are just following it. They are very light and very thin so it's only holding them in place not supporting any weight.

Power is off the battery connector to the battery junction box and the ground is a bolt just to the right of that. I'll snap a pic as that's a clean place for anyone looking to connect to the battery.

Late '80's thru mid '90's GMC and Chevy pickups used a neat underhood light on a manually retractable reel, neatest damn thing you can imagine! Usually about $5.00 in a u-pull-it yard.

My father in-law had one on his 92 Sierra he replaced this year with a 2010 sierra which doesn't have one. Neatest idea for sure but an average work light and a decent engine light. After seeing my setup tonight he's going to be installing the same setup in his truck instead of tracking down his old setup.

Only response from people who's seen this setup is "how much? and how do I do it?"

----------
The is off the wire off battery connector to the battery junction box I have for my air horn relay and the ground is a bolt just to the right of that.

Here's a pic of the junction box connection with the cover removed. This is a great place for battery power without having wires hanging off the battery. The small red wire is power to the relay for my air horn.

Here's the only other place the wiring is visible coming up to the hood and the tilt switch that's switching on the ground wire.

Just bumping this with a quick updated that the lights are still working perfectly and been used in -30c (-22f) in the winter and recently I was stuck in grid lock at a stand still in 33c (92f) with bright sun heating the black hood plus really humid and no problems
