Default Lets play what's that sound (with video)

I have been hearing this odd noise for the past few weeks when I brake hard in the truck. I attributed it to the studded snow tires sliding on dry pavement. Tonight on the way home from work I had my window down because its a bit warmer out (40 degrees, lucky me). I heard the noise again and its louder than I thought. I also seem to hear it over big bumps such as pulling into my driveway. Anyways I took a quick video with my phone and this is pretty much the sound. I was able to duplicate it while the truck was parked with the parking brake on. I would say its rotational. Any ideas?

It seems like it is, but I haven't had a chance to crawl under it. This weekend is supposed to be warm so I will get underneath her. Just looking for an idea before I actually do it.

Should there even be that much play with the e-brake on?

From the sound of it it sounds like maybe a damaged wheel bearing or a broken shackle or something in the suspension.

jack up the rear where to tire is and pull from the top of the tire downwards (make the tire move side to side) and see if you have any play> if so, bad wheel bearing.

if not, inspect the shackle and suspension.

its def not brake related....guranteed.

thanks for the info. If all goes well a friend and I will be looking at this Saturday.

----------

if the mounting plate is loose, how do I tighten it? The hub bolt or whatever its called? In that case I guess I would see a broken cotter pin right?

EDIT, looking at the pic again it would be a bearing issue. Correct?

the plate bolts (4 of them) to the diff housing (see pic below)... you will see them when you remove the brake drum (see pic 2)

Update, Ive been sick (as you'll be able to tell from my voice in the video) so I haven't had a chance to pop the drums off quite yet. I did jack the truck up today and I am almost positive this issue is in the brakes now. Let me know what you guys think.
http://s295.photobucket.com/albums/m...=VIDEO0006.mp4

I doubt those plate bolts are the issue because there is no in and out play, just back and forward.

----------

Shit, I forgot to mention I left the truck in gear too for that video, force of habit since I am used to owning FWD cars.

Terry, I haven't had a chance to look into it yet, but I am really leaning toward those drum bolts that you told me about. I noticed today that the sound went away when I was on the brakes. Shit keeps coming up that is preventing me from working on my truck. I was sick last weekend and yesterday I had to replace my hot water heater.

----------

Do those bolts thread into the hub or are there nuts on the back side?

Well, I found the noise. I jacked the truck up, took a wheel off and grabbed the drum, it came right off, same with the other side. That was nice I guess, but shouldn't it be tough get them off? I inspected the brakes and they appear to be fine. Here are pics of the brakes.

Passenger side

Driver side

Everything looks fine to me, nothing loose or broken that I can see.

Then I look at the drums. This doesn't look normal to me.

I put them back on the truck and spun the axle back and forth. The drums bouncing around makes the exact noise I was looking for.

I priced drums at Autozone and they're 40 bux a piece. Is there anywhere else I should look? And how the hell would this happen to a set of cast iron drums?

Do I have 9 or 10 inch brakes. As a reminder its a 99 B2500 SX. Manual 3.73. Also, which way would I turn the star adjusters to tighten the brakes. Down or up?
