Default make your own tonneau cover....

i was just thinking of the possibility of making your own cover and how good it could actually be...like im sure some people have tried but it ultimately come down to your materials and budget...i was thinking along the lines of building one like the fiberglass type(like STL has) but fabricating it with another material like plywood, plexi-glass, some sheetmetal, etc.
and to add to this you could use the

im not saying i want to build my own but i was just thinking it is definatley possible and you could end up saving lots of $$$

There is a guy from texas that made his own

Plywood then painted it with water replant stain then laid outdoor boat type carpet over the top

Kinda ghetto but cost under 200 dollars

Im just saying he could have done a better job at it. I understand not wanting to pay a bunch of money, but it could have been done better and still cheap

i guess if you could miraculously get some nice supplies like fiber glass or some sort, a home made cover could be pretty ballin'
and it would be dirt cheap to fabricate

fiberglass is really easy to get, especially around here, i guess its just all the boat manufacturers, i could see using a plywood core and sealing it, then covering with a couple thick coats of fiberglass and lots of resin, i think you would have the most trouble figuring out the hinge setup so that its stable enough for high speeds

I built one with a frame of 2X2s, and 1/4" plywood for the top, but I couldn't get a slight warpage on one side out, so I went with an aftermarket cover. I liked the design though, so I may revisit it at a later date. it was easily removable and light.

the plywood with fiberglass on top would be great and very strong(with like3/8" plywood)
and i was thinking the hinge setup could be similar to the setup in most fiberglass covers where they have like "shocks" which you could find by getting the replacement for any older suv or minivan hatch...they sell those springs as replacement for pretty cheap and if you mounted them right, you could probably jimmy up something to get it to work or kinda work
