Default Painting chrome parts?

So I busted my front bumper on a Nissan Altima not too long ago, and instead of buying a replacement off eBay or getting the Honda dealership where I have connections to buy one for me, I was thinking of going the cheap route and grabbing one from the local pull-a-part. They just got a 99, and I'm wondering, if it is a chrome bumper, would I be able to sand off the chrome paint and make it white?

paint will not stick to chrome... now if its chromed plastic take it all the way down to plastic, prime and paint...

If you have "Connections" to Honda to get you a free bumper, why would going to a local pick a part be cheaper?

I have connections but in no way would it be free. The labor cost would likely be a bit lower, but I would not get a brand new bumper without paying for it.

You cant chrome plastic, now chrome paint on the other hand...

If its chromed then paint wont stick, thought the do have a black tint spray for chrome, I dont think they have white.

You could etch the chrome (which requires you to use acid so have caution), primer, then paint. Or, have some fun with a good sandblaster and get the chrome plating off down to the metal bumper. But for what it's worth... I would look at the cost of a replacement and weigh your time.

True, I cannot find a color-matched bumper to my white paint anywhere. Unfortunately, the ranger at pull-a-part had already been stripped of just about everything. I guess its a popular enough truck.

I've seen self etching primer in a rattle can.
You'd need to sand/roughen the chrome to get most of the actual chrome off, then prime, sand & paint (sanding between coats) and it should work.
Probably won't last as long as or look as good as OEM, but if you're on a tight budget & have the time to do the work, it's an alternative.
