Default customizing taillights....... mmmh.

Ive got an idea about my taillights. I want to do a very cheap custom fix to my truck.
1.the idea was to take the plastic cover (clear part) off the tails
get a can of primer, and a can of flat black dupli-color, and mask off the signal lights (red reflector part). and paint it black.
2.then wait for them to dry. before screwing the cover back on.... put waterproof sealer around the edges then screw the taillights back together.
and you should have a pretty good looking taillight.
has anyone ever done that?

It might look good but if you paint over the lense, the bulbs lighting up may not be visible and You may get stopped depending on motorvehicle law restrictions in your state

They sell those ya know

Seriously, for Rangers too. My 03 has them, but I tinted over that, so it's not obvious. Same price too from StylinTrucks if I remember right.

do you already have the tail lights and want to mod them black? or are you in the market to buy them? because they make them black...

The black ones are like $40 after shipping on ebay...Thought you meant tinting the lenses too...Was gonna say you dont have to take the lenses off to tint them.

If you want an idea of what they will look like (being originally clear instead of red) with tint on the outside...Pretty sure these were clear before tinted.

Good luck separating the tails.

I have opened about 6 or 7 of them now and I've never been able to get the housing away from the lens whilst saving both the lens and the housing.

I have successfully been able to get the lenses off by ruining them and saving the housings, but last night I tried to get a set of good lenses by destroying the housings and I cracked a lens.

Personally I think the examples you've posted are really tacky, but my plan is to open a pair of aftermarket tails and paint the chrome to match the body, and convert to superflux LED, instead of using the factory bulbs.

Closing them back up and sealing them in a way that is relatively serviceable will be a huge challenge as well.

I like the idea if you can pull it off since it's a popular taillight w/ the black.... but I REALLY like JP7's idea...

Thanks - I've already completed the body matched front lighting (side markers and headlights) with full LED and HID Projector Morimoto retrofit. The lenses have been reattached (yesterday) and I'm waiting for it to get nice outside so I can install them.
