Default Tailgate protection

I am looking for some kind of pad to throw over the tailgate when hauling stuff, like lumber or other stuff that rests or dangles over the tailgate. I saw a cover that is intended for hauling bikes, but it is cloth with foam inside. I would like some kind of rubber that won't leave marks on the paint, and thick enough to really protect.

The truck I just bought, the body is in great shape except the tailgate has lots of deep nicks and scars.

Any ideas or help is appreciated.

I recommend a Herculiner or another type of thick roll on or spray on liner. I just did mine and had alot of knicks in the tailgate, I sanded and primed them then covered it with Herculiner

Line-X is the best option for that... Not only will it protect the finish from scuffs, It will also protect from bends when you lay those heavy boards down on the gate the way some of the loaders do at the hardware store.

A local Line-X shop coated a beer can with the stuff and after it cooled, I stood on the can with it up right and with it laying on the side. That can did NOT crush under my 230 lbs. I was surprised by the structural integrity of the Line-X spray.

if its only going to be when you haul boards and stuff, id just get some rubber matting fro your local hardware, tractor supply type place and keep it clean and stored inside. then when your going to use it, drape it over the tailgate and the boards and that will hold it down, and the rubber will protect it and not slip. that also would prolly be the cheaper route as well.

i'm pretty sure just a set of bed caps and the matching tail gate cap would work just fine..
