Default Advice needed, Snow Plow 02'4.0l 4x4

Hey guys.

I have done some looking around to learn all I could about snow plows considering putting one on my Ranger as it impresses me a little more everyday. Well I found the one to have by my best judgement. I'll be picking it up in a week. Now bear in mind I am not going to be doing municipality work just a couple small lots and clearing our road after the city barricades us in clearing the main rd. I picked up a 450lb 6'6" Western Standard duty Uni-mount. It was the best all around one I could figure. There's "a guy" out here who ran a 6'6" Boss Power V on his ranger for years until the frame rusted out from under his truck. I figure his plow was 200lbs. heavier so this one shouldn't hurt too bad. Besides the cheezy private use plows end up only being 100~120lbs. lighter after all is said and done with and from what I've "heard" will go by by if you hit any icy snow, they are designed to neatly clean powder from your drive. Any old frozen ruts or otherwise will snap them.

Now to the nuts and bolts.
If it seems necessary is there a way to stiffen the front suspension?
Anything I should do to prep for the install?
What's the best medium to use for the rear weight?

All thoughts are greatly appreciated! I have read through some of the old threads on here and got the gist that there are some mocking ney sayers and that's fine, But please let's keep it clean and useful. Here is a link showing the exact same plow on a ranger.

http://www.plowsite.com/showthread.php?t=33880

Thanks in advance and hopefully this will be useful to others considering a plow on thier tought little toys!

I guess you could put some heavier-duty shocks upfront to start with. Cranking the torsion bars stiffens the front end too. As far as weight in the back, Buy bags of sand to throw back there.
As for any other preps for installing a plow, maybe start figuring out the wiring and where you want to run everything.

Yes you have torsion bars, I wanted a plow last winter but heard the were bad for the IFS.
And my truck will be parked this winter, i put too much money into it for these ohio winters.

Good luck and i would love to see some pics!

Thanks 01, was pretty darn sure but I have been wrong before. Although I can see them when standing beside the truck. . .
I'll be sure and post pics when I get it all set up!

If your salesman was any kind of salesman, he would have sold you whats called "timbrins", they are rubber bellow like pieces which take the place of axle stops. Western recommends them in their application book.

Thank you for the heads up. I'l be getting these! I have had zero luck with sales people. I spoke with one shop wont do becuase don't service western, and Knapheide said all good we'll update it to the Unltra mount blah blah blah so I got the plow and now they cannot backpeddle fast enough. I cannot find anything about this plow on the web or through Western. It is seriously funny. I've got $3k waiting to finish the install and no one is interested so i am gonna forge this one on my own. Hell I have done crazier things.

Below is the link to the info. Email or check out the company website for distributors in your area.

I worked for a company that put 6' western ultra mounts on rangers b4 western did. We fabbed our own mounts. Just need to be sure it doesn’t interfere with the crumple zones of the frame. We also put v box salt spreaders in the same trucks.

I personally converted a western v plow to live hydraulic allowing the use of the original western controller.

Nothing you can't do if you put your mind to it.

Will do. Right now I am looking into having it custom fabbed trying to find out the difference between the frames I know that they are boxed in the latter, but I have no idea what the older frames look like to see whether it would be worth it to purchase the old mount kit and mod it or is it so haneously different that I should just shoot it from scratch??

I am really pleased the plow is really old but has little to no use there a little paint peel on the upper edge but like no rust anywhere. . .

Just wish I could find specs on the thing. . . . .

Internet phenoms here ya go. . .

Western UniMount Standard Plow. 6'6" I've had zero luck, it's as if it was wiped from the web.

Well I have about 2 hours in calls out and it is looking pretty good.
I believe I am on the trail of a capable fabricating contractor for alot of the bigger companies around my town. If there would be enough interest I may look into having a few mounts made for others, as long as they understand their truck, their responsibility.
My rig has 116kmls. but I have replaced all/upgraded all suspension components, cep't torsion bars, new motor mounts, new tranny, new fluids everywhere.

Just let me know, I might post a new thread about it later.

Right now I am trying to see if it is a viable option to use the newer Ultra mount, set-up but I am seriously monitoring the weight for obvious reasons. For all to know, from what I have learned. . .
in 98 Ford beefed up the front end of the Ranger. The mount for the older Ranger held Uni mount plows. I have sought and found an original Uni mount 6'6" plow which from what I can find weighs 460+/-lbs. The newer waiting to break personal plows are about 60lbs lighter then the original plow. Marginal at best. Now, Beefier front boxed frame + Old School solid plow = Me Very Happy.

I am just trying to find and compare mount weight specs to see if it would be feasable to use the newer Ultra mount instead of the hard to find Uni mount, but in the end may just end up having a from scratch mount fabbed. We'll see. . .

Thanks! Will do. I finally got ahold of the fabricator and it's golden I'm meeting with him later this week to discuss the install. To Ultra or not to Ultra? That is the question.

Hmm, Oddly I have not taken any pics of the plow yet. Guess I don't wanna have to uncover it. . . Well with anyluck it'll be mounted next week! Of course just for fitment checking, although I could probably fit some bristles and do some street sweeping for poops and chuckles. . .
