Angry Parking Brake will not hold truck, Please HELP!!

Hi all, I have done research, and could not find any information. I have a 1996 Ford Ranger. It has the 2.3L I4, and it is single cab. I replaced the brake shoes, and now the parking brake on the truck will not hold on any sort of slope. Everything is put on correctly, and adjusted so the shoes have the correct amount of pressure on the drum surface.
When you apply the parking brake, the peddle goes clear to the floor with little resistance. I have followed the parking brake cable and can not find the adjustment for the parking brake cable. I have searched throughout the forums, online, and even showed it to a mechanic at a shop, who was stumped. I literally cant take it anywhere to fear of the truck rolling, as it just turns off the engine, so putting it in gear (reverse) will not hold it either.

PLEASE HELP! Thanks

I apologize if this is the incorrect thread, I could not find anything remotely close.

Sorry, I don't understand this part. Why does putting it in gear not hold it? I know you need a brake to park on some slopes, but you should at least be able to drive it otherwise.

The cable moves just fine in its covering. You can see it move at the drum, it just doesn't move enough.

I wish the engine would hold it, it will slowly turn over the engine, and the truck rolls down the hill.

oh I can drive it, just can not park any where, without it rolling. The weight of the truck, turns over the engine in every gear including reverse. It will even turn the engine over backwards. It actually is a common issue with small engines, and a Manuel transmission.

OK, yeah - that can happen for a variety of reasons unrelated to the problem.

So it worked fine before the brake job?

The weight of the truck will want to make the truck roll, when that happens the roll travels up the drive train, and the compression of the engine holds the truck from rolling. But, because the the engine is so small, and the compression so little, it doesn't have enough to keep the engine turning over, just as if it was running, without spark.

I apologize, I guess I didn't word it correctly. The truck rolls in gear, is not the problem. It is common for that to happen. The truck relies on the parking brake to keep that from happening. But because I cant find where to adjust the parking brake cable, it doesn't work.

The rear brakes are adjusted, they also have an automatic adjuster that is working properly. It is not the adjustment on the rear brake shoes. It was looked at by a shop, and they could not find anything wrong with the drum brakes, adjustments, or cable position, as it is to OEM specifications.

What I need to know is how to adjust the parking brake cable.

Looks like you either need to replace the cable or MacGyver it somehow. I checked the Haynes manual for the 1993-2008 Ranger. From page 9-18, item 11 Parking brake - adjustment:

"The parking brake system on all models is completely self-adjusting. No means of manual adjustment is provided."

Maybe your cable has been stretched past the point where the self-adjust can compensate?

I dont get how a truck rolling forward with the transmission in reverse could start your truck. You might need a new clutch (that was the problem in my 95 4.0). As for the cable, you might want to go buy an adjustable cable. OPTION 3: Get some blocks to put under the tires.

I too cannot get how the truck can be started with the tranny in reverse, with each manual transmission vehicle ive had i have never heard/had this problem. when on a hill and the back is facing down, 1st gear. when on a hill and the nose is facing down, reverse.....e-brake was always on but it was just a precaution.

anywho - ebrake is fairly cheap to buy, and a do-it-yourself job that wont take long at all.

Shouldnt you have a neutral safety switch to prevent that from starting on its own?
