Painting a Toolbox
Just got a good deal on a diamond plate toolbox off of craigslist, i want to paint it black but i'm worried spray paint would scratch off too easy. Would a roll on bed liner work better, or would one of the fancier spray cans for metal hold up just fine? I don't mind respraying after a few years if a have to.

Re: Painting a Toolbox
I think the roll-onn liner deal would work...I think the main thing is to scratch the surface a bit to give the paint something to grab onto. They sanded my bed before spraying the Line-X on it. Spray paint cans recommend using a fine-grit sandpaper before painting the surface too. I'd get a drill and a wire brush doo-hicky and run it all over teh surface before putting anything on it.

haha he was posting a link, click it.
i did this to one of my boxes, used a herculiner kit from walmart actually. worked great, the only thing is ditch the scotch pad they give you and pick up some heavy grit sandpaper and sand it yourself really heavily. you won't regret it

Re: Painting a Toolbox
one thing to consider, you're painting RAW aluminum. if it were me, and i have experience with this matter because I have researched the matter through and through. I am painting an aluminum jon boat and have talked to many people who have done the same. IF you paint or roll onto the bare aluminum, its not going to stick very well and if it does, it wont last.
What you need to do it to clean the surface good, then scuff it up with steel wook or whatever, then wipe down with mineral spirits. once dry, you take Nason (made my Dupont) SELF-ETCHING primer and paint the whole toolbox with it. put on two coats. you can even buy it in black. you can get this at O'Reilly Auto Parts. once dry, you are ready for paint or liner or whatever. THe self etching primer really adheres to the bare metal. thats just me though, do what you want.

Re: Painting a Toolbox
I agree with Scott on etching the aluminum. Spent years working a metal plating shop, and EVERY piece of raw aluminum that came through the door, regardless of the process it got was etched first. Reason being is that aluminum is not a very porous material, so therefore it doesn't have the capability to "absorb" coatings very well. Etching does exactly what it says. Though I've never personally used the product he's talking about, I would imagine it is basically an etching agent and sort of primer in one.

Re: Painting a Toolbox
I just primed it with a zinc chromate primer. It is made for painting aluminum, hopefully this does the trick. i spent alot of time last night preping it. It has been cleaned and sanded a few times. I will put the final black coat on tomorrow. i bought an industrial strenght enamel metal paint for that. i only paid 75 for the box which is a low profile kobalt in nice shape, and 30 for paint and primer. After all the work i've put into this little project i hope it turns out nice.

Re: Painting a Toolbox
yeah forgot about that paint too! that works! If alot of guys use it on their boats covered in enamal paint and it holds up, then it should hold up on a toolbox that doesnt see water or rocks

Re: Painting a Toolbox
What did you mean by water? Rain? Snow? I guess i assumed that since the primer i got was made for boats it would be fine getting wet. I'm thinking i will have my tonneau cover on in the winter, so it shouldn't see snow.

i meant a boat is submerged in water and the paint holds well when youve done the prep work that youhave
rain and snow isnt the same as being submerged in it, i think your paint job will hold up well

Re: Painting a Toolbox
I may have goofed. Just put my first coat of gloss black enamel on and it bubbled like when you try to paint a latex based over a oil based. It's not bad, after a few minutes of drying you can't tell unless you get really close. I think i will let the first coat dry, do a light sand, and paint again. If that doesn't work i can always get a herculiner kit.
