Default groove in top of supercab

Evening all:

Facts or opinions. I would like to hear both. My 2003 super cab 2 door has 2 grooves (for lack of a better name) on the roof that run from the back of the doors to the back of the cab. These grooves have a piece of triangle shaped metal in the groove being held in place by 2 studs with nuts accessible under the headliner. Mine is developing rust in the groove under the triangle piece. I want to address the rust before it gets any worse. My question is do the triangle pieces have any purpose other than appearance? I am considering welding the holes up and repairing the grooves leaving the triangles out. I would love to hear from you guys!!
I don't want to change the rotation of the earth or anything!!!!

Thanks in advance

Maybe you should take a picture. A 2 door supercab should not have a groove or brace in that spot.

I was thinking you mean't a groove down the middle.
That trim piece is removable.
