Thumbs down Disable DRL in 2010? (HID related)

After installing HIDs in my truck I realized there would be a problem with the daytime running lights. HIDs can't run on low watt power that the DRL sends out, so when I start the truck with the low beams off the HIDs stay on for a few seconds, then shut off (assuming because they're not getting enough wattage) This means I have to constantly have my low beam HIDs on even during the day. Yes, in Canada it's illegal to not have DRLs but anyone with HIDs disable them anyway because they have no choice.

My question being is there any way to disable the daytime running lights in a 2010 ranger other than going to the dealership? (where it's not legal I can't see them disabling it for me) Or is there some loophole mod to fix this??

Question: (not trying to be a jerk) but, since DRL's are required on vehicles in Canada and since you claim most people there with HID's disable their DRL's, when your driving around during the day and you see a cop, do you quickly turn on your headlights and hope he didn't notice the DRL's were not on, or do you just hope that he doesn't care that your DRL's are not on?

I personally don't care. I haven't had DRLs in my last 3 vehicles (by choice), and cops don't harass me because I don't drive like a douche.

Did you have any trouble with your HIDs in your 2010? Trying to get mine put in and they act almost like a strobe on low for some reason, I am wondering if it is the lights or the truck.. or just a moronic garage. If they fail im going to do it myself shortly

You can't just plug-n-play an HID kit on a vehicle with DRL's enabled. There are only two ways around this for 2004+ models:

1) Go to a dealer and ask them to deprogram the DRL's. They may or may not do it. It is required in Canada so they shouldn't do it. Some will, some won't. It is your risk if you do.

2) Install a 3000uf (or more) capacitor in parallel on the truck's low beam circuit before it connects to the HID kit relay. That means the (+) leg of the capacitor goes on the low beam wire and the (-) leg of the capacitor goes to ground. This will smooth the PWM to a level voltage that will keep the relay latched. You must use a relay harness. You can not do this if you have a kit without a relay. With this done, your HID's will come on just as your DRL's did before. A capacitor to do this job is commonly available at Radio Shack.

Short of completely rewiring the headlight system, those are your two choices.

So putting a capacitor on there will make it so the lows are not a strobe, and DRLs won't hurt the lights? I can't go without DRLs here, but I am sure there is ways around it.

Yes. With the capacitor, the relay will latch and stay on rather than flickering. So your HID's will come on as DRL's and stay on. But remember, you NEED TO HAVE A RELAY HARNESS for this to work. If you have one of those cheap ass kits that does not have a relay harness, you will need to get one.

The kit has a relay, but they discovered the problem. The set is a 9004 set, and it needs 9007, so I have to change them where I got them, I accidentally took the wrong box. Will I still need to worry about DRLs?

Yes, the DRL situation has not changed. You will still need to do this. I would think a place that sells these kits in Canada would have a clue about this by now and have what you need.

My buddy buys these kits in bulk from the states, and since he gets a good price on them he gives good prices to you if you know him, good kits too I have been told! Well looks like I will go get a 300uf? Capacitor and get that rigged up, thanks!

Oh I thought a shop selling them regularly hadn't figured this out yet. 3000uf. Which means three thousand microfarad. It will be about the size of your thumb.

Hey guys I have been reading into all your problems, with my hids I ran the wireing harnes like everything says then the part of the harness that hooks into your your factory cut the red wire and run it to your marker light, there was 2 wires on mine te one I hooked it too was grey, then run what's left for that wire with the 9007 back to your factory( its the ground ) and now you won't have the flicker from your drl I have pictures if oy need
